We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jermeisha Blue a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Jermeisha, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Parents can play a significant role in affecting how our lives and careers turn out – and so we think it’s important to look back and have conversations about what our parents did that affected us positive (or negatively) so that we can learn from the billions of experiences in each generation. What’s something you feel your parents did right that impacted you positively.
One parent was completely absent while the other was secretly battling drug addiction and much more while raising three children. Although, as a child my life with my parents always seemed unstable, they are also responsible for my drive and passion to become a better mother and entrepreneur. My father was always reserved and hardworking while my mom was stubborn but the life of the party no matter where she went. I possess some of those same qualities that have helped me grow my business and push through obstacles that have come up as a business owner and single mother. It’s always been a struggle for my family so my wins are so much sweeter because of everything I’ve endured on this journey and it keeps me inspired in some way!

Jermeisha, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am Jermeisha Blue, mother, creative and founder of Mom With Attitude. I have a background in fashion, design, technology and customer service. Entrepreneurship is something I later became passionate about. My initial vision for Mom With Attitude was to create a community and a safe place for moms to express their negative feelings and emotions about motherhood. I had hit a point in my motherhood journey where I desperately needed a community and answers. My approach was to create a clothing brand and then build the community as I build the brand. We’ll be adding a subscription service and an annual retreat to San Francisco, CA. I am most proud of the future of MWA and how much it will impact the community of mothers we serve.
Are there any books, videos, essays or other resources that have significantly impacted your management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy?
One of my favorite books is written by American Psychologist Marsha M. Linehan called Building a Life Worth Living. When I read that book my mission and my future became more clear to me. She used her journey to help create skills for others and that’s exactly what I want to do for women. It was at a time I was questioning my business and ideas, so it was confirmation for me.

We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
A lesson I had to undeniably unlearn was trying to do everything on my own. In business and in life, you have to learn to trust others. I have to constantly remind myself that it’s okay to allow people to help you carry the vision out, especially the visions and businesses that will help us be better humans, in our case better mothers too.
