We recently connected with Jermecia Garner and have shared our conversation below.
Jermecia , appreciate you joining us today. Let’s start with inspirations and heroes. Are there any historical figures you look up to?
One inspiring historical figure is Harriet Tubman. Born into slavery, she escaped and then made numerous missions to rescue enslaved people through the Underground Railroad. Tubman demonstrated incredible bravery, resilience, and a deep commitment to justice and freedom. Her has taught me the importance of courage, determination, and the power of standing up for what is right. I’d be remiss if I only shared one inspiring historical figure! Another inspiring historical figure I’d like to share is Maya Angelou. She was a poet, memoirist, and civil rights activist. Angelou’s works, such as “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings,” explore themes of economic, racial, and sexual oppression. Her life and writings has taught me the importance of self-expression, resilience, and the strength to overcome adversity.
Both of these women have left an indelible mark on history and the lives of many girls who look like me. These women both serve as powerful role models for young girls everywhere. Their stories keep me remind that with courage and determination, we can overcome any obstacle and make a difference in the world.
As I have matured into adulthood, a wife, motherhood, a career woman, and a Minority Women-Veteran Owned Business I have learned plenty of what I know from these historical figures! I remember as a girl, all I wanted to do was help people in any way I could contribute to their success or in reducing their pain. I soon learned there was a profession called “Social Work” and I could do just what I was born to do! While I did not do much work with the Social Work title, I wore the heart of a Social Worker in all things I do.
After completing my MBA in Project Management I knew there was something I wanted to do to help people, however, I wasn’t quite sure how this would work with my MBA and not actually working in the social work field. I struggled for a while to find something that would allow me the opportunity to contribute something meaningful to others no matter their race or ethnicity. One day, my husband and I set out to get our taxes filed before the season ended. At this time, my husband and I were married. We were referred to someone who we assumed had our best interest at heart. Only to find out later that there were somethings that were missed and unanswered. When we attempted reach our tax preparer to help us resolve the matter, we couldn’t reach her! We couldn’t understand why she didn’t answer or return our calls. Then I thought, this can’t be too hard, I’m sure I can figure this out.
From that moment, I began to research, study and attend purchased trainings in the tax world. Before I knew it, I was thinking about taxes and talking about taxes all the time! Wow, light bulbs popped on in my brain! How many others are out they with the same issues as my husband and me? I started my business still not very well informed, but I knew enough to be dangerous! In a good way that is! I began to tell people about my business and before I knew it, the questions started rolling in. The calls started coming. I then realized, that my past as an Army Logistics Officer had already proven to others that I was already a trusted agent, determined to get to the bottom of everything and fully-capable of seeking out the information if I didn’t know something.
Through the influence of the aforementioned inspiring historical figures I learned that I can help people with the skill I posses. That skill is my love for generational wealth, finances, and knowing enough about the tax world to understand how you can use the tax code to benefit yourself and your unique situation, LEGALLY!
Jermecia , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am Jermecia Garner. I was born and raised in a little town called Tallulah in Louisiana. I attended Grambling State University where I obtained a Bachelor’s of Social Work and a minor in Military Science. While attending Grambling State University, I joined Army ROTC and commissioned as an Army Logistics Officer in 2011. I spent 14 years in the military and enjoyed my service. More importantly I appreciate every moment I managed to influence a junior Soldier and lead them as well as learn from them! Lastly, while attending my university I joined a prestigious organization name Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.
I started my tax practice in 2022 and have been growing ever since. My company name is “Sustainable Solutions Consulting” I started my tax practice because I vowed that if I have been entrusted to take care of someone’s tax situation that I handle it with care and ensure that I am available and communicate with them properly. My company offers Tax Advisory Services as well as Business Consulting services. I believe that helping someone meet their tax needs, means to aid them in obtaining a Sustainable Solution for their tax matter. I have assisted clients with their tax planning needs. Helping them to understand that tax planning is important for everyone, not just business owners. My company offers, tax filing, W2 and 1099 creation and filings for contractors. We also offer Notary Services and business consulting. Business consulting is inclusive of ensuring individuals have their business entities setup properly to avoid any tax implications that may not be favorable to the taxpayer, etc.
The problem I solve for my clients is learning about financial literacy as it relates to their tax health and sharing this information with them to help elevate them. What sets me apart is that I believe, everyone deserves honesty and fair treatment as it relates to the rendered services they receive.
I am most proud of the self-starter I have become in challenging myself with one of the most complex professions to work. I want clients current and future to know that no matter what I will always be willing to ensure your problem is resolved and you are more informed that when you came to me initially. One thing about my brand is that I incorporated the color purple as a tribute to my late mother and as a representation of femininity, maturity and gender equality!
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
What helped me build my reputation within the market is honesty and having a past that illustrated my trust worthiness. People were also surprised that everything I’ve learned, I’ve sought out the information in my own terms and they see the growth as a result. Lastly, not being afraid to talk about my business. I am proud of my business and I share it with everyone when the timing is right. I think style in this regard is importance!
How do you keep in touch with clients and foster brand loyalty?
I keep in touch with clients through my CRM. I had it built custom so that I could properly and efficiently manage my clients and manage their notes so that I can start and stop as needed but properly document all things for heir case files. I send them automated informational emails as well as reminders and notifications as we journey through the tax filing process.
