We recently connected with Jermaine Singletary and have shared our conversation below.
Jermaine, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. If you had a defining moment that you feel really changed the trajectory of your career, we’d love to hear the story and details.
Although Jermaine Singletary was known as the lyrical entertainer “Too Fresh J” and toured the US with major rap artists, there was always that desire to do more for our youth of today. Jermaine entered the field of education as a means of meeting youth where they needed assistance the most . . . within our schools. It was there that he realized how much of an impact he was. While teaching, Mr. Singletary developed a nonprofit organization (Binding Ties) to provide support to youth and families in need. This was the defining moment in his profession that helped him to realize that GOD had provided him a blueprint for providing a positive change in the lives of others.
Jermaine, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Jermaine Singletary is the CEO of the nonprofit Organization Binding Ties, a teacher, poet, author, lyrical entertainer, and a community Leader. Jermaine goes above and beyond to make a positive impact in the lives of others. Over the past year, he has been challenging others to take part in the “Binding Ties Good Deed Challenge,” where he posts good deeds that he does throughout the community. Understanding that many of the youth he is connected with come from low-income and poverty-stricken communities, Jermaine chooses to make a positive difference in their lives in hope that they may become productive citizens within their communities. He models these activities to encourage and prepare them for the jobs that they may be positioned for in the world of tomorrow. Jermaine understands that overcoming adversity is a way of defining your own circumstances. He stays motivated by helping others! He truly believes that exposure yields experience! He feels that every child should have the opportunity to give their best in life. Giving a child a “Purpose gives them Power to Motivate their Destiny.” Jermaine understands that GOD has provided him the gift to serve. He is motivated by seeing the accomplishments of others through his giving. Jermaine Singletary has always taken the initiative of doing positive things within communities. He continues to carry that motivation into the alternative school classroom where he has been teaching for over 16 years. With a plethora of accolades to his name, the thing that touches his heart the most is seeing the joy and smiles on the faces of those he assists. He concludes that, “With A Mind of Opportunity, Anything’s Possible!”
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
Being that Jermaine Singletary was always engaged in the community, and with youth as a Hip Hop artist (Too Fresh J.), he had decided to dedicate his time and talents to serving the community. His service actions resonated into his day-to-day life. From speaking with youth as a public speaker to teaching in the classroom, his interest always involved creating a positive difference within the community and lives of youth. The term “Binding Ties” signifies the bringing together of community, family, and schools to tie into one main goal: helping our youth of today prepare for a better tomorrow. It is the love and dedication that Jermaine shares for his commmunity that builds his reputation within the nonprofit sector.
Training and knowledge matter of course, but beyond that what do you think matters most in terms of succeeding in your field?
I think the most helping thing for succeeding in the field of nonprofits is your Leadership role. My philosophy of leadership is having the ability to influence or guide others positively. A leader sets the tone, and direction, while inspiring and motivating individuals. Through your leadership, you create a vision of success and challenge others to get out of their comfort zone. I believe a leader facilitates encouraging growth and success for his/her team, provides a means of open communication, and understands that no “one” person is greater than the team. A leader not only knows how to lead, but a leader also knows when to follow. My leadership role is evident in my current role because my purpose is to Educate, Motivate, and Demonstrate! I aim to Educate youth by assisting them in learning life skills that will prepare them for the life of business and day-to-day activities. I Motivate youth by providing incentives that introduce them to “real-world” scenarios. And I Demonstrate by not only being a positive role model, but also by creating a positive atmosphere that is conducive to learning and becoming successful.
