We were lucky to catch up with Jermaine Sain recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Jermaine , thanks for joining us today. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
Learning my craft is something that I have continued to struggle with because I’ve had to teach myself everything. I have always wanted to have a mentor; I’ve just never been that lucky. However, I don’t see that as a bad thing because it has allowed me to find my own pace and find out what works for me. Sometimes I wonder if I could be further along in my craft if I didn’t have to research so much on my own. I speak with people on a daily basis that have a dream or a vision and the biggest thing that holds them back is waiting for the perfect moment. If I had waited to have a better skill set, I wouldn’t be where I am today. So, now I constantly encourage people to move forward even if you don’t know what you are doing, try what you do know and improve your skill as you progress.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I’ve always been an entertainer at heart, and I’ve always had an eye for photography even as a kid. In high school and throughout my military career, I sang for weddings, plays, and military ceremonies. When I exited the Army, I moved to Atlanta with the dream of becoming some type of entertainer, whether a singer, actor, or model. One day as I was riding in my car, I was inspired to start a Youtube show and that began my true journey. I figured that if I conducted entertainment interviews, it could be a networking tool for me to meet people in Atlanta’s entertainment industry. Fast forward, that channel became When We Speak TV and I realized that I absolutely love talking to people about their passion.
When We Speak TV is an independently owned network dedicated to providing unique media solutions for organizations, venues, and individuals. We do so through interviews, blog articles, social media posts, event coverage, and red carpet hosting.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
I had to learn that I’m worthy of any successes that come my way. For some strange reason, I always struggled being good enough, or if people would accept me. One day, I was talking to a friend, and he said, “Jermaine, people will accept you because they can see your honesty and sincerity when you interact with them”. At that moment, I got it! I was struggling with being accepted because I hadn’t accepted myself. I was so busy trying to be what I believed I should be, not realizing that being authentically myself was my secret sauce. Now, when I interview people whether it’s a red carpet or for a segment, I allow my authentic self to drive the conversation.
How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
This is definitely a layered question, and I could go on and on about this because I speak with creatives on a daily basis. But rather than speak on their behalf, I will speak for myself. As an independent creator, I can’t stress enough how important the like, share, and comment buttons are to me. I like to refer to When We Speak TV as positive media, but it is so difficult to be noticed in a system that is driven around negativity. It’s super important that if someone is online that you want to support, that you give them your views, likes, and comments. And that doesn’t even cost you money!!!
