We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jeri Newton a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Jeri , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
The most meaningful project to date for me has to be my “Draft Day” that was released last year. It was the first project I worked on since the passing of my mother, even has her last voicemail on the beginning of the opening track “Cry Baby”. At that time In my life I didn’t know where I was headed or even if I wanted to create anymore. “Draft Day” was basically me declaring that this is what I want to do with my life and I’m here to stay! From billboards, magazine interviews, and B.E.T I had a lot to prove to myself. Draft Day definitely saved my dream!
Jeri , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Jeri Newton, I was born in Sumter (Merk), South Carolina. Honestly I started my craft in College. Some would say I began a little late but I think it was perfect timing for me. I went to school for film and theater at Full Sail University. It was tough moving states away at 19 yrs old. Just you by yourself. So I just started writing to sort of vent to myself. Met a couple students in the recording arts program and the rest is history. I never looked back. I started my own record label last year “Sonday Records”. It’s a great feeling having something that’s yours & no one can take from you. Still one of my proudest moments as an artist. I believe something that sets me as a brand apart from others is my resilience. If I say I’m going to do it it’s getting done!
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
Oh ofcourse, as a screen writer I always had this goal to just watch these ideas I put on paper come to life infront of the biggest audience. To inspire and create an have it shown all over the world. As a music artist the goal is pretty simple, create an album that shapes the culture on a grand scale! The Greatest Story Ever Told!
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
So many things I had to unlearn, so many. One of the biggest things was learning how to lose. Hear me out, learning how to lose is needed. It’s all about how you react to the loss. I was so use to winning that if there was even a minor inconvenience i would throw a tantrum like a child, neglecting the lesson. Had to heal my inner child. I had to learn to accept and let go of things out of my control.
