We were lucky to catch up with Jeremy Williams recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Jeremy, thanks for joining us today. What was it like going from idea to execution? Can you share some of the backstory and some of the major steps or milestones?
Going from idea to execution is probably the biggest step to starting a business. I think people come up with great ideas everyday, but being able to execute those ideas is what brings those visions to life. My idea was to create a baseball hat that could be dressed up or down and worn for most occasions because I couldn’t find one in stores. Once I decided I was going to start the business I researched as much as I could about the process and steps to starting a business and followed the steps that were common on the websites that I visited. I researched my name to make sure it wasn’t taken. I had my CPA set up my business to make it legal in the state and federal level and once everything was legal, I started working on finding manufacturers to make my products. Once I had my products, I set up a website, hired a photographer to take product shots and photos of me in my hats for the website and social media pages. Being that this was my first business and that I didn’t have a mentor to guide me, there was a lot of learning as I went through everything. After buying boxes to ship, one day I just decided I’m going to launch because I think I have everything I need to ship my product and so in September of 2019 I launched and my first customers were friends and family. After that I had to learn how to market to strangers, which is something I’m still working on learning, but it’s a fun challenge. It’s coming up on three years since I launched and I’m now in three stores in Dallas and looking to expand more.
Jeremy, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’m an avid sports fan that loves to eat well and travel often. I’m an engineer by degree that likes putting things together, like a well put together outfit, which explains my interest in fashion. I got into the apparel business out of my interest in fashion and I offer men’s, women’s, children’s, and toddlers apparel through my clothing line. My clothing line solves the problem of being able to wear apparel that can be dressed up or down. I’m most proud of just being able to start a business from the ground up and people should know that I donate a portion of my profits to charities that support causes that I agree with.
Can you open up about how you funded your business?
My business is entirely self funded. I’ve always been a believer in living below my means and investing what I can afford. Doing those things over years allowed me to have enough money to buy my initial inventory and start my business.
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
The best source of new customers for me has been getting in stores. My business is online and in stores, but people gravitate towards my product when they see it in person.
