We were lucky to catch up with Jeremy Tremp recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Jeremy thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Your ability to build a team is often a key determinant of your success as a business owner and so we’d love to get a conversation going with successful entrepreneurs like yourself around what your recruiting process was like -especially early on. How did you build your team?
In the film and photography industry, it’s fairly easy to create a one man business built around your skills and make a living. Creating a company that can maintain the level of quality you’ve established with multiple employees is an entirely different story.
When we first started Offensive Marketing Group it was based on the skills of three individuals. Between us three we had a great sense of the client relationship, technical work, and how to maintain profits. As we began to get a larger body of work under us, we began to offer more services and found our first employees.
It was quite daunting having other people that rely on you to run a successful business to feed all of your families, but we trusted the team and the process to continue what we started.
Since the beginning we have hired based mostly on personality, work ethic, and that certain spark that is only perceivable through decades of experience. We find individuals that are hungry, capable, and looking for more than just a career.
We’ve been extremely blessed to attract an incredibly diverse group of creatives that work together for the larger goal of executing the same creative vision to accomplish our clients goals.
By hiring people younger in their careers, we are more easily able to train them the way that we work and develop their skillsets to meet the unique goals of the business.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
Offensive Marketing Group was create to serve the outdoor industry. We wanted to work on projects that we are excited and passionate about. We also wanted the creative challenge of helping companies market products that may not be able to advertise on traditional channels.
Currently we provide photography and video services along with social media management, brand development, digital marketing and copywriting.
We take the approach of the consumer when we are creating marketing materials. We get inside the head of the user or customer and we approach marketing from a story telling perspective. As owners we are a part of the entire process with our teams. We don’t sit back and reap the rewards, we are the first to get our hands dirty, stay up late, and get the project done to the OMG standard every time. By doing this, our team feels confident to give it their all every time, team work truly makes the dream work.
We care deeply about every client and every project that comes through our business. When you work with Offensive Marketing Group, you speak to the owners of the business, and you have the confidence that the work gets done right the first time,
Any advice for managing a team?
Best way to retain your work force and attract other high performers? Treat your people like family. If that means that you must sacrifice first to make sure they are taken care of, so be it. Your employees are the life blood of your organization. Create a place that you would want to work at, and be the boss you would want to work for. Give your employees as many benefits as you can manage, and provide them with opportunities for continued growth and upward movement, and they will stick around for a long while. Last and most importantly, don’t forget to have fun. You will spend more time with your co-workers than your own family. Make each and every day count.
We’d love to hear about you met your business partner.
You will hear over and over “Be careful who you partner with in business.”. While this may be true and relevant, sometimes and often it’s necessary to make the next leap. The key is finding the right business partners. On a bad day they can pick you up, share the burden, share the success, come up with solutions, and add value where you may be lacking.
I am thankful to be partnered with two of the best guys on the planet. One of them is my brother, the other is a brother from another mother. Scott and I met on Facebook as we were both filmmakers in the Phoenix area. We immediately hit it off with a similar sense of humor and hobbies. Over the period of a few years we collaborated on commercials, music videos, and finally a feature length movie, “Max Reload and the Nether Blasters”. After the film we decided to officially venture into business together with my brother Jared who brought a much needed sense of organization and businesses structure.
“Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.” – Ecclesiastes 4:12
