We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Jeremy Thayer. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Jeremy below.
Alright, Jeremy thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What’s been the best thing you’ve ever seen (or done yourself) to show a customer that you appreciate them?
At our Jewelry store, we sell real value and not illusion like many stores. We sell classic, timeless jewelry that will be in vogue for countless generations. We stand behind everything we sell and educate our customers as to why it is better to buy jewelry that will stand the test of time and not todays trendy pieces.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
What sets us apart is my level of experience. I began in 1982 as a direct importer of important gems from Sri Lanka, Burma, and Thailand. In 1985, along with partner Bruce Davidson opened Dianus Lanka LTD in Kalutara, Sri Lanka, a cutting factory with over 110 full-time cutters and polishers. I traveled to mining centers throughout the world acquiring rough gems for production cutting. The combination of the skills developed from learning to grade and value rough gems coupled with early years of study at the Gemological Institute of America and the Asian Institute of Gemological Science laid the foundation for a unique expertise that very few in the industry share. I later applied this expertise to sourcing and buying fine estate jewelry. Many jewelers and even gemological laboratories have called on him to assist in identifying and evaluating rare and important diamonds and gemstones.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
When traveling in Nigeria, where we used to buy Tourmaline and Aquamarine rough for our cutting factory. I would stop at a hardware store and buy a 3 foot chain and a banana knife for protection.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
In the early nineties the weak dollar against European and Japanese currencies made it difficult to buy in the mining centers, so I pivoted to estate buying here in America.
