We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Jeremy Sean Hector. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Jeremy Sean below.
Alright, Jeremy Sean thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. If you could go back in time do you wish you had started your creative career sooner or later?
My decision to pursue a creative career started much later than is normal for others in this field. I was 24 when I did the first performance of what you would become a career in the performing arts. It was actually supposed to be something I would do just to get me by between jobs and I just never looked back. Knowing what I know now, I would have started earlier if given the chance. This business requires a serious time investment to get from amateur to professional and I feel like starting sooner would have given me more of an advantage. I would have had extra years worth of performance experience under my belt. That being said, I believe that things happen the way they do for a reason and perhaps this was just the path that I was meant to take.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Like many musicians, I got into it through playing at church every Sunday. I didn’t think I would become a professional musician but it just worked out that way. In 2015 i formed a band that enjoyed more success than I thought was possible at the time; and paved the way for me to start a solo career in 2018. Since then I have released a solo album (“Ascension”) which has exceeded my expectations. It has been featured spotify’s editorial playlists and was ranked #2 on Canada’s itunes jazz chart during the week of its release. My home island of Grenada has a population of just over 100,000 people so it was really a big deal for me to have millions of streams from people all over the world. My music falls under the smooth jazz category and is mainly instrumental. Since the start of my career, I have worked as a session guitarist, musical director, music teacher and performer. I have had the pleasure of working with some amazing people on a host of different projects. My second album (“Light After Dark”) is scheduled for release in the summer of 2022.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most reward aspect of being an artist is hearing the stories of people have had an impactful experience with my work. Most of my songs are instrumental so listeners are free to explore how it makes them feel without the suggestion of lyrics. I have received messages from people from countries all over the world who found me on their favourite music platforms. It’s really rewarding because the experiences they had were rich enough that they felt compelled to seek me out and share them. This motivates me to keep making more music.
What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
If it could be quantified, I think we would find that a large percentage of our existence revolves around the work of artists and creatives. That being the case, I think acknowledging and placing a higher value on the work that comes from this industry will go a long way in supporting the people who work tirelessly to keep creating.
