We were lucky to catch up with Jeremy Lee recently and have shared our conversation below.
Jeremy, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
I’ve been a student of hip-hop since around the age of 16. It was something I never envisioned being able to do until I met the right group of people; through an organization designed for like-minded artists of all kinds. I knew none of the people in the group prior to joining, yet I quickly felt right at home. I got my start into hip-hop as a hype-man for one of the artists in the the group. A hype-man basically provides backing vocals while doing anything they can to keep the crowd engaged, or “hyped”. I remember being incredibly nervous before hitting the stage, but once the show began that feeling faded. I started to feel the thrill that keeps me doing it again and again. After that it was clear I should persue writing some lyrics myself. The artist I hyped for and I soon formed a hip-hop duo called Pariah’s Exemplar. We spent a couple years putting our first album together and during that time I started to create music myself. I’ve been doing it going on 10 years now, and I don’t plan to stop anytime soon!

Jeremy, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’m a hip-hop rapper and producer by the name of J Pun. In the short time I’ve been making music, I’ve had a lot of positive criticism and have been fortunate enough to perform many times throughout the western United States. I believe what sets me apart is the unconditional love I have for all the different outlets stemming from hip-hop. Graffiti, beat making, and everything in between. I do this for the love and respect I have for the art form, not for fame or fortune.

In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
Like, share, comment! Spread the word! This is the best way to support independent artists…and literally costs nothing. Most consumers don’t understand how little artists make from streams. So spreading the word can make our fanbase snowball so we have more fans coming to shows or purchasing merchandise, which really helps toward investing back into our music.

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
I live in a fairly rural community in southwest Wyoming. There are little to no establishments to hold concerts where I live. My ultimate goal is to open and operate a venue with a fellow artist so we can bring in musicians and grow our music community.
