We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Jeremy Joyal, MD. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Jeremy below.
Alright, Jeremy thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Was there a defining moment in your professional career? A moment that changed the trajectory of your career?
I always toyed with the idea of opening my own clinic. But, it also scared me. During my fellowship, I came home from a conference and told my wife that I wanted to start my own clinic. We talked about the hundreds of thousand of dollars of tuition debt we had as well as our lack of knowledge in business, and we quickly put the idea aside. Over the next five years, I worked really hard expanding my knowledge and skills as well as building and growing others’ medical practices. In 2018, a separation from my employer really gave me the push I needed to “leave the nest”. If I was going to start all over, I was going to do it for myself.
I started my own clinic in December of 2018. I only saw eight patients my entire first week, and I was thrilled. I was so honored and humbled to be trusted with the care of those patients, and I still feel the same way today with each and every patient who walks through my doors.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers?
I established Advanced Spine and Pain to help patients suffering from a wide variety of pain conditions regain function and restore quality of life. I offer state-of-the-art therapies and the most comprehensive treatment options. (Treatments include epidural steroid injections, radio frequency ablations, kyphoplasties, spinal cord stimulators, Intracept procedure, Vertiflex, intrathecal pain pumps, and several other non-invasive therapies.) Through aggressively treating pain conditions, I believe the opioid crisis our country and communities face can be corrected.
My goal has been and always will be to help my patients get control of their pain and get back to living. My team and I try to treat every patient like family and give them the best care possible. I am a firm believer in a comprehensive care plan and work closely with patients’ care teams, including primary care physicians, neuro and ortho surgeons, physical therapists, psychologists, chiropractors, and other practitioners.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
I was given the advice very early on in my career that to be successful, I simply had to practice good medicine and be a good person. That has really stayed with me. I love to build relationships with both patients and providers. I try to meet every patient who comes into my clinic, and I provide them with the very best care that I can. Sometimes, doing the right thing means leaving money on the table or doing things for free or after hours. But, I can tell you that I have been blessed tenfold in these situations. I have earned the trust of referring providers, but more importantly, I have earned the trust of their patients, which has been a catalyst in the growth of my practice.
Are there any books, videos, essays or other resources that have significantly impacted your management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy?
The Go-Giver by Bob Burg and John David Mann has an amazing message that greatly resonated with me. (It’s a must read for everyone.) This book is all about having success in business and becoming a better person by being more authentic and providing value to others.
