Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jeremy Cardosa. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Jeremy, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
I started learning how to do video essays by taking inspiration from others who did the same – expressing passion and what they loved about the topic. It re-kindled a love I had for writing in me I forgot about long ago.
What I know now is that it’s very easy to take shortcuts because you want to put the videos out as quick as possible, but sometimes you have to slow down and add the intricate details, because those can go a long way. I think if I could go back, I would tell myself to let the pen (or keyboard in this case) flow freely on the page and the rest would take care of itself.
I think the most essential skills I learned for my videos are editing the cuts to match the commentary, and balancing the audio just right.
The biggest obstacle that prevented myself from learning more was myself. Sometimes you can easily get into your own head and let that dictate how your videos turn out.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers?
I am a content creator who specializes in the analysis, retrospectives, and theories of popular mediums such as but not limited to Movies, TV Shows, Video Games, and Anime.
In December of 2020 as Cobra Kai Season 3 had been announced, I noticed that there was a new character in the trailer not many knew about and decided to make a video on it. I didn’t think much of it, and decided to do another one-off video on one of the main characters (Johnny Lawrence), and planned to call it a day. To my surprise, both videos did extremely well with the Johnny video going viral. 3 weeks later, I was at a 1000 subscribers, applied to be a YouTube Partner, and got approved in 2 days (when I told it may have taken up to 30 for them to make a decision)!
I believe what sets me apart from other creators in the same space is that when I’m analyzing a character, I look at all aspects – their strengths, their flaws, what makes them unique, etc. whether they’re a favorite of mine or not.
The most proud accomplishment on my channel is that I doubled my channel views (4 million to 10 million) and nearly my subscribers (13,000 to 24,000) in a 30 day span from December 2021 to January 2022.
My channel is known for its analysis on Cobra Kai, but I have expanded into other series and topics such as Way of the Househusband, Tiger and Bunny, Mortal Kombat, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, and Tekken.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
In June of 2021, I had to take a break from my YouTube channel for financial reasons, and didn’t make a full return until September 2021. Usually, when a YouTuber takes a break for more than 2 weeks, it’s almost certain that the channel could never fully recover. However, I disproved that theory by posting one video during my hiatus, came back strong in September, and then from December 2021 to January 2022, doubled my views and subscribers.
What do you find most rewarding about being creative?
One of the most rewarding aspects is how your work reaches people of all walks of life, whether they’re young or old. I’ve had purely wholesome moments from youth saying they’d love to do what I do someday, and I’ve also had fans of Cobra Kai who watched Karate Kid in theaters in the 80s express their admiration for my attention to detail.
