We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jeremy Barr a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Jeremy, thanks for joining us today. Let’s start with the story of your mission. What should we know?
My mission is to impact 3 billion people. My life story is what created the mission. It’s about how I went from getting failing grades in school to engineer then CTO, COO, CEO and now VC investor who mentors CEO’s globally across 300 calls a month in a meticulous plan to impact 3 billion people.
I received low to failing grades for years until one year my mom (who was a teacher) took me out of school in 7th grade to homeschool me. She helped bring my grades up to A’s and B’s and put me back into school where I received A’s and B’s. I went on to do a Computer Science degree, build the Super Bowl website, do AI on a project with the FBI & Secret Service and more. But there was the next hiccup. I was CTO and managing internationally all at 27 yrs old yet when I moved to San Diego California USA after exiting a 10yr relationship and getting divorced…I realized I couldn’t socialize.
All my life I had one very significant person, the same 5 friends who accepted my quietness and spoke to people obsessively in the domain of technology and business. I realized I couldn’t socialize when I was invited out to the bar multiple times by new work friends in the new city where I wouldn’t talk for the whole 2 hours they did. They would ask “are you ok?”. I didn’t know at the time that it’s helpful to talk. After several promptings of the question I decided to use my algorithm brain to create a “conversation algorithm”. I made conversations last 5 mins, then 15 mins, 1 hour, 10 hours, 36 hours. Then from that I wondered why people talk and what makes humans different. I then created a “human algorithm” to understand all different types of people.
This is where I went from “super nerd” to “super social”. I went out for 6 months straight with a calendar booked 60 days out in advance the whole time. Every single day I did an activity with friends…snowboarding, skydiving, volleyball, surfing, racing Lamborghini’s, shooting a machine gun out of a helicopter, festivals, dinner nights, game nights…you name it.
Then the next big pivot happened….I got bored. All the money, friends, attention, fun…I was snowboarding down a mountain and I stopped half way. I thought two things…1. I’m bored. 2. With all my skills I’m meant for more than this.
I had this analogy in my head on that mountain. I don’t want to live in a mansion on a hill while the rest of the world is burning. So I set a goal to impact 3 billion people. My mom passed away from cancer 5 yrs ago…let’s go solve cancer, world hunger, anxiety, depression, etc. All of it. I wrote AI that did 8 months of work in 60 seconds and have a global powerhouse team…there are no limits.
I don’t need to impact all 8 billion people…there are other world changers. 1 billion doesn’t feel enough for me if I’m on my death bed thinking about it. 3 billion is my commitment.
Now I’ve been at million $ and billion $ companies, DTC, B2B, public, private, managed teams of teams of people, did $100,000 a day media buying, AI on a project for the FBI & Secret Service, did and managed nearly every role in a company, bought a company, became a VC and now mentor CEO’s globally in the $0 to $100 million range (where the most of my experience is).
Hopefully by now people realize how much I don’t care AT ALL for attention. I state certain details for quantification and clarity so that I’m not just spewing fluffy words of “world impact”. What I care so much about is quality people.
The story behind my mission says this: anyone can do anything they want with ZERO limits…all they have to do is believe.
Delusional positivity is mathematically correct. There is so much more I can say and that is why I do Founder Mentoring on LinkedIn.
My mom gave me the initial belief…I compounded it and found my own source of belief…not in results but in the unwillingness to give up.
You can do anything you want…just don’t ever ever stop.
A few principles to live by…
1. You are an infinite being, time is an illusion, never rush…we are here to Learn, Experience & Create (LEC).
2. Have kindness and compassion for all of those around you no matter what they believe.
3. Belief breaks are the only place we grow. Beliefs are built up by data but they only work for certain environments and times. “Periodically” retest them. It is not a matter of IF they will break…it is only a matter of WHEN.
4. Life is not in words or your thoughts (made of words)…life is in feeling…say snowboarding vs feel it…say love vs feel it. Go experience life richly today and learn to create infinitely better experiences and creations. Have fun! You don’t need all the answers. Often it’s better to not have the answers and just be guided by your feelings and intuition. There are more chess pieces at play working in your favor than just you. Learn to “listen” much much more to everyone and everything so that you can understand more and connect where you feel aligned and passionately alive. Go LEC with love!
Jeremy, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My career path at a high level was sales -> engineer -> CTO -> COO -> CEO -> VC Investor -> Global Founder Mentor. I mentor CEO’s across 10-13 calls a day (8+ countries a day)…300-390 calls a month. I mentor Founders and C-Suites in the $0 – $100 million range. I’ve done and managed nearly every role in a company. I wrote more about this and myself in another area of this article so I won’t rewrite it here.
I have spent 24/7 diving into what makes humans great and what makes up the purpose of living in a way that is very prescriptive to each human being which have such a wide variety of differences but also some general similiarities.
I think I’ve dove into the topic more than most so I hope if you interact with me that I can enlighten beyond your wildest dreams. We can even talk about what I think dreams are and we can talk about the dimensions of space time itself.
Of course we can also stay very grounded and talk about numbers and tactics to grow your business, get investment, etc the fastest possible….from copy in paid / organic posts to CAC to LTV ratios and managing teams of teams of people.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
At one point in my life I lived in a tent (first time publicly saying that)…at another point I had bank accounts shut down from being negative too long and debt chasing me…I’ve also pulled in $250,000 in one 4 min conversation and dealt with millions of dollars. I also got very bored of money, attention and low growth rate relationships. Resilience doesn’t come from knowing you’ve made it before so you can make it again…it doesn’t come from knowing the right process (although it helps and I teach that)…it doesn’t even come from believing in a higher power bigger than yourself that will fully take care of everything with no effort from you…resilience comes purely from your unwillingness to give up which when done from a healthy source is healthily sourced from the desire to see what you’re made of, what you can create/do/experience/learn and possibly what you can do for others.
Can you tell us the story behind how you met your business partner?
How I met my co-founder. A mutual friend introduced us and we have been best friends talking everyday since. We have spun up multiple businesses and it’s a lot of fun. The short story of that matters because moving through life is 10% strategy and 90% synchronicity. Almost 100% of your time will still be dedicated to strategy but the biggest results won’t come from that. I met two other business partners in the elevator. There is no strategy that should say go to 300 elevators and adjust for some 5% conversion rate like a landing page. You connect with people at the right time only when you are in your frequency of authentic you…and you’re positive and you’re focused on helping others…with your self narrative turned down low to zero. The strategy, learnings, etc that you do in between synchronicities are crucial to taking advantage of the frequency sourced inbound that comes your way. So go live life extremely calm. Follow your intuition, learn, move with speed if you want, move with a science approach and a mathematical approach but also be listening for the next synchronicity and stay out of any stressful states because that prevents you from the next synchronicity like the synchronicity based intros that netted me millions of dollars. Also note I reference money because it’s a valuable medium and it’s quantifiable but the best of life won’t be found in money…it will be through money. Money is just a better way to trade when you have Apples, want Oranges and the Orange seller doesn’t want your Apples.
