We recently connected with Jeremy Adam and have shared our conversation below.
Jeremy, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Are you able to earn a full-time living from your creative work? If so, can you walk us through your journey and how you made it happen?
I was advised during undergrad to stay as a theater major because I needed to learn how to perform to be able to be a well rounded singer and entertainer. That advice, and the resilience that comes along with being a theater performer has helped me navigate the gig world and maintain steady work as a children’s music educator during the day and a performer in various venues at night!
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I started in musical theater, but early on I taught myself how to write music and lyrics and that was the beginning of my journey into the world of original music. Since then, a few of the hats I’ve worn include: solo artist, band leader, recording artist, actor, producer, director, playwright, composer, voice instructor, guitarist, pianist, accompanist, recording engineer and indie singer-songwriter. My whole life, I’ve been immersed in music and theater.
My music is often born on the acoustic guitar, but thanks to a diverse musical upbringing, my sound is inspired by many genres, including: rock (classic, alternative, indie, folk), pop, soul, r&b, and musical theater. Im constantly in collaboration with various local artists, producers, and musicians, and always trying to find a new sound, smarter lyrics and something that speaks to who I am and to which others can relate.
Originally from New Jersey, I moved to Philadelphia in 2011 to pursue a degree in theater from Temple University. I graduated in 2015. During my time at TU, I started to find solo gigs, I was constantly writing songs and eventually got into recording original music. I helped to form and lead a local cover band for 5 years.
Nowadays, I’m working on a few different projects with the original music. I perform regularly as a cabaret singer and solo acoustic musician, and I’ve played on stages all over the country.
I also produce events for local artists and have hosted many different types of shows and events. I’ve now been writing music for over 20 years and have been independently releasing my music since 2016.
I’m always working on new music, and plan to keep releasing independently until I find my audience!
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
Being a performer is based on resilience. I’ve been getting rejected since I was a kid because that’s the nature of the business. When I was in the cover band scene, the other original members of my band were all eventually replaced and at the end of the day, I got asked to leave and was replaced in a band I helped to create. That in turn launched my solo career and gave me the kick in the butt I needed to produce my original music.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
I enjoy when I see folks singing along with my music. I know that I’ve reached people because the song has stuck with them in a way that makes them feel something and the main thing I want is for my music to reach people and relate to folks.
