We recently connected with Jeremiah P. Mensah and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Jeremiah P., thanks for joining us today. Do you wish you had waited to pursue your creative career or do you wish you had started sooner?
I wish I had started my creative career sooner because there is no substitute for time in the field. There was a 2-year gap between when I first felt called into ministry and when I started putting out content. Sometimes I think about those 2 years and wonder what I could have learned in that time if I had just taken the plunge. So for anyone considering any type of endeavor, just keep in mind that perfectionism kills progress. What matters is that you start and learn as you go. If you never begin, you won’t know what works, and you won’t know what to improve.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Hi, I’m Jeremiah Mensah! I am a Bible teacher and content creator. I create videos on various topics in the Christian faith like salvation, identity in Christ, Bible study tips, and apologetics. My journey as a content creator began in 2020 when I started creating piano worship instrumentals and uploading them to youtube on my channel, Depths of Worship. I didn’t start producing what I now consider to be my main content (Christian teachings) until almost a year later. Since 2021 I’ve been on a mission to make Jesus known by preaching the true, simple gospel of grace. I began on TikTok and eventually created a second YouTube channel for long-form content. Recently I started to write more, and now I have a blog, newsletter and a free ebook available on my website!
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
I have to say it’s the transformation I see and hear about in people’s lives. The gospel changes lives, and to be a witness of that is pretty rewarding in and of itself. Whenever someone comments or messages me about how the truth has set them free, and how a better understanding of the gospel has helped them, I’m reminded of the reason why I do this. My life was changed by the gospel, and to be used by God in that same capacity is mind-blowing. When it comes to my music, it’s rewarding to see people comment about how their anxiety was quietened and how much peace they feel from a piano instrumental!
How did you build your audience on social media?
I built my audience primarily on TikTok and later Instagram before pivoting to long-form content on YouTube. My growth on social media was facilitated by a few videos that went viral, but unfortunately, at the time, I didn’t know how to capitalize on that virality to build a core audience. By the time I learned this, the viral waves had passed. So my advice to new creatives is to experiment as much as possible. You won’t know what works until you try. Test, test, test! And when you find something that works, double down and capitalize on it to grow an audience that will outlast the viral waves. Also, don’t chase virality, but be prepared in case it happens! Focus on what value you can bring to your audience and experiment with the way you provide that value.
