We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jeremiah Cobbs a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Jeremiah , appreciate you joining us today. It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
Every time I drop a product I take a “risk”. To produce a quality product on a small scale is not cheap. Most factories MOQ for a small order is 300 units. It’s truly an investment. There is no feeling like putting all your time and money on something and when you release only a few buy it. A lot of us creatives have been there. That same moment teaches us the hustle and drive it takes for your craft to be seen as valuable. You learn not only what it takes to create and produce but what it takes to sale. Each one is an art on its own. It’s only a risk if you have a possibility of loss. In my experience every time I thought I lost I gained. Trial and error is the process that we take to gain information.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Jeremiah Jahvan Cobbs and I am an artist. I like to consider myself an artist instead of just a fashion designer because I see the art in everything that I enjoy doing. Rather I’m riding my motorcycle, playing drums on stage or shooting at the gun range I transcribe it all into my fashion. It reflects in the textiles chosen, designs I think of, and the enjoyment of bringing ideas to life.
I would say the fashion industry chose me. I never thought that I would express myself through fashion. I found an interest in it and dove as deep as possible into what it took to be successful in the industry.
My company offers products from bags and accessories to sneakers. I recently started to help clients bring their ideas to life. This will include making a tech pack, creating sample products, sourcing material, and finding factory to put into production. This covers everything you will need to make it happen. I offer my knowledge to my clients to ensure a successful run. There are not many people who are capable of these task in one.
I am most proud of the knowledge I gained. It’s been a lot of trial and error that I continue to face but I embrace it with confidence. My goal is make a brand I started from scratch a household name. I want to create a brand that is valuable to its people.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding feeling someone can give me is enjoying my art. For someone to see their self in what I created and put their own sense of style to it is such a cool feeling.
How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
We have to continue to do the things that you’re doing. Our social media platforms such as Instagram and Facebook want you to spend so much money just to be seen. For a lot of artist money is an issue. Offering more funding and bigger platforms for creations to be seen will create a thriving creative ecosystem. I believe people will support what they know but what they don’t know they can’t support
