Jeremiah, let’s kick things off with a hypothetical question – if it were up to you, what would you change about the school or education system to better prepare students for a more fulfilling life and career?
Educators, parents, and coaches should recognize that children need to be equipped with the right tools to unlock their potential. Instead of asking them what they want to be in life, they should be asking our students what problems do they want to solve? Too often young people grow up without an answer to this crucial question. As a result, many adults grow into adulthood still not sure of how to maximize their contribution in the world. If we ensure our youth can identify how their unique talents might address certain issues or create valuable solutions, this will give them a sense of purpose which will help them foster self-confidence and pride in their work.

Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
When I was 22 years old, my world came crashing down. A career ending concussion forced me to retire from the NFL and forced me to realize that football was no longer part of my life. As an athlete I had attached my entire identity to the sport and as a result I went through a period of intense mourning at losing something I considered so integral to who I was. This long dark period of anxiousness, depression, and potentially suicidal thoughts was mitigated when I made the pivot from being an NFL football player to a educator in the NYC Department of Education. My eleven years spent serving K-12 grade students allowed me to rekindle my love of helping others and this passion has been carried throughout my current endeavors. It led to becoming an international speaker, author and student success coach – positions which continue to fuel each day not only with purpose, but joy for all the future paths yet unwritten.

Are there any books, videos, essays or other resources that have significantly impacted your management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy?
As a leader and entrepreneur, Atomic Habits by James Clear and Jump by Steve Harvey have had the most influence on my development. Reading these books has given me clarity and insight into how small improvements can produce significant results over time. From Atomic Habits, I came to appreciate the power of disciplined routines and micro-habits, while Steve Harvey’s core message of fearlessly embracing risk was instrumental in convincing me that great rewards often come with great risk. Overall, these two books had completely changed my approach to leadership and entrepreneurship – they drove home the importance of managing one’s life down to the small details in order to build progress towards something more impactful.
