Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jereme Schumacher. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Jereme, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What did your parents do right and how has that impacted you in your life and career?
When asked about the most influential factors that have affected my life and career, the first thing I always say is my mom. For as long as I could remember, my mom instilled the importance of hard work and compassion in all that she did. But it wasn’t through her words, it was through her actions. Being a registered nurse, my mom would work long hours throughout the week and frequently be called into work on the weekends. As a kid, it was sometimes difficult to understand why my mom was working so much, but it was also fun because we would often visit her for lunch at work on the weekends. When we would visit her at work it was very apperrant, even at my young age, the respect and appreciation that her co-workers, and more importantly, her patients, had for her. I used to get impatient walking through her facility because she would always stop to say hello to every single patient to see how their day was going and if there was anything she could do to make their day better. Although I didn’t realize it at the time, this compassion and care that I was witnessing would manifest itself to become one of my strongest traits as a physical therapist today. My mom understood that there was much more to healthcare than just having a degree and showing up to work each day; it’s a vocation, a calling. Showing true compassion for others is something you can’t fake. You have to show each patient that you really care and you’re going to be there to help them during this tough time in their life. As a physical therapist, it can be easy to get caught up in all the newest techniques and lose sight of the necessity for compassion and empathy. Watching my mom’s genuine, earnest actions as a child, which I am still witnessing to this very day, I believe I’m not only a better physical therapist, but a better human being because of it.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My professional career began at a fast-past sports clinic here in San Diego in 2017 shortly after graduating with my Doctorate in Physical Therapy from San Diego State University. Eager to expand my clinical skill set, I pursued multiple certifications in Functional Range Conditioning, Applied Functional Sciences, and CrossFit. Equipped with a multitude of new techniques, I quickly found myself struggling to utilize these skills with my patients due to the high patient volume and short amount of 1-on-1 time I actually had with them. This lack of 1-on-1 patient care served as a catalyst to branch out on my own and partner with Bespoke Treatments to open a clinic in San Diego. Bespoke Treatments is a physical therapy and performance center that is redefining the overall physical therapy experience. By instilling a 1-on-1 treatment model I was no longer overwhelmed with multiple patients at the same time, allowing me to give my undivided attention to each patient throughout their entire treatment session. This was crucial in developing a deeper relationship with my patients to not only help them recover from an injury, but to empower them to take control of their health. Physical therapy is much more than just rehabilitating a current injury, and it requires an integrative approach to take into account multiple factors within a person’s life. Factors such as sleep hygiene, nutrition, and breathing habits, are all essential to maximize recovery and tissue healing in the body. Here at Bespoke Treatments, each treatment session takes into account all of these biometric factors to ensure you are optimizing your recovery, so you can live better, longer.
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
In a service based industry, this is the million dollar question; “How do I grow my clientele?” From personal experience, the main principles that I have found to be most successful in building a strong client base include networking, and more importantly, being a genuine person. When looking to gain more exposure to your target market, networking is crucial. Every interaction you have, both inside and outside of your work setting, is an opportunity to make a connection and expand your current network. The challenge with this method is there are seldom immediate conversions, which is why I like to think of networking as farming. You’re planting seeds that will require attention and effort in order to grow, but with time, you will be left with an abundance of connections that will continue to lead to new opportunities for growth. The second and most important principle I have found to grow my clientele, is to be a genuine person. You can meet all the right people, but if you’re not a genuine person, especially in a service based industry, those relationships will never flourish. With these two principles in mind, I have found myself with a strong network of individuals and companies that align with my goals as a physical therapist, and have helped me grow my business into what it is today.

We’d love to hear about you met your business partner.
My business partner Brad Whitley and I met at San Diego State University, where we had both chosen to go to get our Doctorate in Physical Therapy. We quickly became close friends, but after graduating, Brad moved back to Seattle to work for Bespoke Treatments, and I stayed in San Diego to work for an outpatient sports clinic. After working for a few years, I realized that I had bigger aspirations, so I left my safe clinic job, and started my own physical therapy practice in San Diego called E.P.I.C Performance and Physical Therapy. Things were running smoothly during the first year of business, when Brad let me know that he was moving back down to San Diego to potentially join me at E.P.I.C so we could grow a PT practice together as we had always talked about in grad school. Upon moving back down, Brad was contacted by the CEO and founder of Bespoke Treatments located in New York City, to see if he was interested in opening up a Bespoke clinic in San Diego. Without my knowing, Brad told them that he would only do it if he could bring me along with him to open up the San Diego location. Once Brad got the green light, he presented me with this situation, and I immediately saw what an incredible opportunity this was. From that day on, Brad and I have taken San Diego by storm, introducing the local communities to the Bespoke Treatments experience, and providing the absolute highest quality physical therapy services.
