We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jereme Brown a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Jereme, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
Well upon my last interview I stated how my business “Series Blu” came about. I always wanted to run my graphic design firm and offer numerous art services that I’ve learned and build a team around that. Although this had a strong start I’ve discovered not everyone can be as passionate or connected to your business as you are.
I was able to go through the harsh growing pains and spend every last dime into I believe can get to where I want it. I may not have the team but I’m discovering once they see you succeeding and working hard that will spark their interest into wanting to be apart of something bigger.
I’ve been doing this design and photography and art for about 12 years and 10 years as a business owner.
The idea that gets me most excited about doing this is just discovering new ways and new styles of doing the art or design. Seeing peoples faces of being shocked and surprised on how great a art piece was executed or shot taken from different shoots. Also being around other creative minds get the mind working.
Jereme, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
So the funny thing about this story about me becoming a graphic designer is I had no idea what it was. When I left high school I knew I wanted to do art but had no clue of where to start. All I know was that I was interested in creating video games at the time because I was taking 3D classes in high school and found it very interesting. So I had a friend suggest The Art Institute of Houston and that I should do the interview and check it out.
When I went there I showed the art I was doing during the interview and explained what I wanted to do. The interviewer Dianne Sawyer suggested I should do graphic design. I didn’t know what this was but it sounded like 3D art but I was in for an awakening. I went further into this program realizing without realizing that this maybe something I want to do.
Fast forward later after leaving the school I worked in numerous print shops and photography studios. Once I build that confidence working with senior designers and photographers I decided I wanted to see how this will go for me if I did it on my own. It was a struggling start but “Series Blu” was created from a dream I had. It just look good on paper. My previous story I said the name represents my color blindness and how blue is mostly the only color I can see. So I see a series of blue things which spawned the name.
I’m mostly proud of how far I’ve come from winning multiple best designs for the previous studio I worked at. This coming from someone who didn’t even know what graphic design was.
Any advice for managing a team?
I currently don’t have a team but what I can say is when I was a senior graphic designer and my previous job I had to manage a team.
My advice to business owners or managers. To keep a high morale within your team is to make sure you show them that you appreciate them. Show them that you value them. We’re all not perfect so sometimes we can mess up but as a manager it’s your job to try to help them and get them back on track. If they see you keeping your confidence it definitely gives the team a boost.
Also be sure to always support a team who wants to go out and do they’re own thing or go to they’re own endeavors.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
So my audience on IG is a mixture of fans from my art, design and photography. I try to do it all hahah. I mostly meet people at art conventions that I go to display my illustrations or from meeting people at different social events around the city. When people see you with a camera they automatically going to want to chat with you. My fan base is not huge but I’m proud that the fan base I have is always chatting with me and that they are organic followers and genuinely love what I do.
My advice to building a social media presence is just be consistent. Not saying post everyday but definitely show enough that you are active. Post even if it’s a sketch or a process of something you are building. People love to see process to what’s to come of a final product. The followers will come over time.
