We were lucky to catch up with Jerell Tanner-brown recently and have shared our conversation below.
Jerell, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. So, let’s imagine that you were advising someone who wanted to start something similar to you and they asked you what you would do differently in the startup-process knowing what you know now. How would you respond?
What i would do is capture every moment. This day in age social media is the major platform. Content is needed to stay relevant and consistency. So i would literally save all my photo/video in an archive to post them day and eventually the algorithm will locked in. As well volunteering/ advertising & promotion can all be free. Networking is the Biggest Key
Jerell, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am born and raised Brooklyn native “bedstuy” cooking is way how i express myself and articulate my passion. I got into the industry simply by attending kingsborough community college culinary arts programs and excelled extremely well with honors. Services i offer are cooking classes, weekly meal preps , personal chef/traveling chef & cateror. What seperate me from other is i put love into every dish i produce and i respect food. You would notice within every bite. Im most proud that i turned mealsbychefjerell into a family business. My wife is my pastry chef, sister is my sous chef and brother is my handy man. MealsbyChefJerell will display a remarkable amount of hospitality & delivery satisfaction towards yours palette tastebuds.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
Social media changed the game. While I’m pretty old-fashioned, adapting to the changes around you is essential. People constantly seek for advice recommendations, and for entrepreneurs, social media is your best tool. My advice? Stay consistent, create content regularly, and develop your own algorithm for success.”
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
While moving my car during alternate side parking, I noticed an available spot and suggested it to a stranger. As I handed them a business card, I casually mentioned the services I offer, directing them to my social media platforms. This simple interaction eventually led to an invitation to be the private chef of their daughter’s graduation party and gained me a loyal customer who continues to support my business. I highly recommend always carrying business cards with you—you never know when a chance encounter might turn into an opportunity.
