We were lucky to catch up with Jeralyn Victoria recently and have shared our conversation below.
Jeralyn, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to have you retell us the story behind how you came up with the idea for your business, I think our audience would really enjoy hearing the backstory.
My artwork historically has been about trauma and resilience. As the imagery morphed into fabric patterns, wearable art and interiors, it only made sense to me to start to also illustrate the body systems anatomically as well. Whether I mirror image the vagus nerve system to illustrate the importance of co-regulation or layer chakra toned water color under a spinal diagram to connect physical pain with spiritual and emotional landscapes, I’m suggesting these are all somatic and interconnected results of environment and generational patterns.
Jeralyn, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Because I’m interested in my own healing, I’m highly motivated (regardless of what I do) by education, attachment and bringing to light uncomfortable topics that the culture would prefer to keep shadowed. So this informs how I approach everything. Jewelry, painting, illustration, abstract work, interiors, clothing, photography are all media I’ll bounce in and out of depending on the client or concept. People that have followed me for some time know I prefer to not compartmentalize these art forms and I enjoy the risk in putting these media out of context to prove a point.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
One of the greatest lessons I learned quickly was to not be in a victim mindset being scared to tell my own story. I learned to build a personal mythology around my experience so I could use visual metaphor like a short hand and trust that talking directly about trauma, resilience, treatment modalities and what I’ve learned about my body is personal and authentic and ALSO incredibly universal and relatable without trying to be. People that need to hear what I have to say are drawn to me and it’s mutually healing. It’s been enlightening to trust that my story is not only safe to tell, but empowering to speak.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
I’ve recently decided to make this artwork into high resolution digital images so that I could have a much broader reach to the wellness, medical and healing community globally. I decided to completely redo my website to reflect this goal offering fine art prints on canvas as decor for any setting in addition to the wearable artwork. Since the imagery is educational, artistic and spiritual, it could easily be in a clinical setting, residence or medical environment. It’s really morphed into a body of work that has so much more clarity and is far more curated now!
