We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jerad Linnell a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Jerad , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. What do you think matters most in terms of achieving success?
Starting a business has been one of the most difficult things that I have done in my life. Measuring success is based on what kind of goals you have set for yourself. It is very hard to measure and you have to take risks and sacrifice to achieve them. One of my biggest takes on success is being consistent. You have to constantly put your self out there to learn and grow. The results may not always end up how you intended but you have to keep pressing forward. Taking time each day to make yourself better is one of the best investments you can make.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I got into my business by spending my spare time around a grill making food that puts smiles on faces. I put a lot of time and effort into what I make and the biggest compliment is when people ask for seconds.
One day I was outside cooking just like millions of other men and women. I was brushing sauce on some chicken and wanted to make the process easier. I started to use the brush as a spoon first..then brushed it with the bristles. After I was done cooking that day I scoured the internet to find a brush/spoon combo. I couldn’t find anything and this is where the process for my invention began.
After we had our basic design we thought about how to make it serve more than one purpose. This would eliminate the need to pack kitchen drawers with multiple utensils. We ultimately invented a basting brush system that has 3 interchangeable brushes and can also be used as a ladle. The ladle breaks down and can be stored in a sauce bowl along with other grilling essentials.
I am very proud of the thought and ingenuity that went into this invention. We created something truly unique and that makes the cooking process more enjoyable. I can honestly say that we accomplished this goal but are always looking for ways to make our product more useful.

We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
We started our business at the beginning of the pandemic. When our product was ready to be shipped..a huge backlog of vessels were forming in the LA harbor. What should have only taken a few weeks to get out merchandise ended up taking about for months. The day it landed was one of the biggest reliefs I have ever felt. Everything was accounted for and in good condition. We hit the ground running and made our merchandise available through our website and at pop up vendor events We are currently available on line and at about 6 local barbecue supply stores in Southern California

Can you talk to us about manufacturing? How’d you figure it all out? We’d love to hear the story.
Our products are manufactured. Our concept began with a hand sketched drawing that was transformed into a digital rendering. Once the rendering was created we reached out to a kitchen utensil manufacturer that helped us create a 3d printed version of the digital rendering.
Our very first version of our basting brush was nothing like the final product. We went through about seven different versions of it before we finally decided to go into production. We wanted something that people were proud of when they held it in their hands.
I went through this process thinking like a consumer. People are going to spend their hard earned money on our products and we want them to enjoy it and tell others about it.
A big lesson that I learned is that nothing is ever going to be perfect and there will always be ways to make something better. You can’t sit and wait for perfection…you just have to be willing to make improvements and accept constructive feedback
