We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Jephthe Ferdilus. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Jephthe below.
Jephthe, appreciate you joining us today. So, let’s start with trends – what are some of the largest or more impactful trends you are seeing in the industry?
I’m noticing a strong shift in brand identity into world building and creating more than a vibe for a brand, it’s developing how a brand feels in the real world through all touch points. I find it fascinating that designers and brands are taking the steps to think critically about how their ideas live in different scenarios, it gives the idea a much more tangible form. As I work with clients, I try to ask them questions to have them understand that they’re no longer creating a mark or just a logo for a flat screen, but you’re creating an experience that tells a story. Through websites like Drake Related where he has an interactive merch store through his mansion, or how Jacquemus used a banana to launch an entire campaign related to its merch and store, brands are elevating the possibility of what an idea can mean and that’s exciting to me as a designer. It gives you more things to design and an idea to explore. With the rise of everything artificial, it’s refreshing to see work that doesn’t necessarily feel like it’s inauthentic.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Jephthe (jeff-tee) Ferdilus and I began my design career editing photos at the age of 10 for my friends on myspace. I then went to school for Chemistry but ended with a major in Graphic Design. In this process, I’ve been able to use the scientific method in design. I identify the problem, generate a hypothesis and work through the other steps to learn something new about each project. My recent work I’m most proud of is the brands I’ve been able to work with and the various industries I’ve been able to learn more about through my work in design. My main clients and people I work with know I have a strong love for clothing and how it communicates ideas, I love how ideas translate through color and form, and I’m constantly fascinated by how the possibility of what something can be is elevated through strong photography and aesthetics.

Any resources you can share with us that might be helpful to other creatives?
I strongly recommend people build a strong Pinterest board and categorize them by your industry. I have countless boards that I’m constantly referencing to clients, factories I’m working with, and people when I need to communicate an idea. If I was aware of the capabilities of this in college, creating cohesive visuals would have been much more strategic. I think if people use the other tools like Cosmos. So in collaboration with Pinterest, you can really create strong moodboards that you can present to a client before doing any of the work to make sure your goals aling.

We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
One major thing I learned this year was a change in my mindset on how I view my thoughts. I often had a voice in my head and it would bring up my past but through listening to people like Dr. Joe Dispenza, I’ve learned that you can train your mind to think about the future you desire and raise a more elevated state of being. I’ve had to re-learn to challenge the thoughts that I never second-guessed and had to consider what thoughts I did want to fire and wire within my subconscious. I think we all have the tendency to forget that we are hearing this chatter that doesn’t reflect anything but our past and forget we can change this voice.
