We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jenny He a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Jenny, appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
I’ve recently just finished production for my narrative short. This short film is an adaptation of a feature I co-wrote with Ian Hunter, titled ‘The Art of Loving.’ Right now I am doing post production on the film and planning on submitting to festivals early next year. I am very excited to share this project soon!
Jenny, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Jenny He. I was born and raised in China and Germany. I am a music video and commercial director based in New York. I’ve directed music videos for artists such as The Voice winner Sawyer Fredericks, Rachael Sage, Grammy Award Winner Dan + Shay, and Larry Campbell. I frequently collaborate with BBC Storyworks, directing branded documentaries for BBC’s commercial department. My work has been screened at numerous film festivals around the world and has been featured in The New York Times and Rolling Stone.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
Ever since I was little, I have been amazed and dazzled by the big silver screen, and I knew very early on that I wanted to be part of making that magic happen. I want to share my viewpoint of the world, to make people cry, laugh, and feel much like I was moved when I sat in a movie theater. I believe that movies have the ability to transport the audience to a different time and space, and I want to be able to do that with my work.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
I think the most rewarding aspect of being a director is the ability to collaborate with other incredible artists and work together to bring stories to life. Every project I work on, whether it’s music videos, commercials, documentaries or short films, the team infuses a part of themselves into the project, their sensibilities and perspectives. It’s a fantastic feeling to know that people actually appreciate the work you’ve created and the greatest satisfaction comes when people are able to resonate with the stories I’ve been able to bring to life.
