We were lucky to catch up with Jenny Gutierrez recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Jenny thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
The idea for my business was born long before I came to the United States, back when I was a young graphic designer in Venezuela filled with dreams and possibilities. I studied Graphic Design and Advertising & Marketing, had my first job, and even owned my first design business. Life was good, but political turmoil and insecurity forced me to make the hardest decision of my life: to leave my country and start over with my daughter in my arms. I arrived in the U.S. with no money, no connections, and no certainty only the hope of giving her a safer future. The Americana Community Center became my first refuge; they believed in me when I could barely believe in myself. They helped me learn English, build my first business plan, and secure a small loan that allowed me to buy my first machine. At night, while my daughter slept, I worked from home making mugs and small personalized products, holding on to the hope of rebuilding my profession. I worked anywhere I could waitressing at Habana Rumba, cleaning houses, and moving between different restaurants always carrying my dreams quietly inside me. One day, I offered to design a logo for a customer, and his reaction reminded me of the passion and talent I thought I had left behind. Later, I invested everything I had left into a restaurant, hoping it would be a new beginning, but it became one of my greatest losses; I lost almost all my savings. Yet from that fall came connections and lessons I didn’t know I needed. When I left that restaurant, I visited every business owner I had met and offered my menu design services. That was the true beginning of everything. I started selling menus, traveling to other states, building my reputation, and finding my way back to my craft. Over time, I reinvested every dollar into new machines, new techniques, and new opportunities. Today, through JD Creative, I offer embroidery, printing, custom uniforms, UV printing, and large format printing, helping businesses of all sizes present themselves professionally and grow. It has now been 12 years since I began this journey. My business was born out of necessity but grew out of love love for my daughter, for my craft, for my community, and for the belief that even when you arrive in a new country with empty hands, you can still build something extraordinary with heart, discipline, and faith.
Jenny , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I started studying graphic design in Venezuela because it has always been my passion. I studied Graphic Design first, then opened my own design business, and that experience pushed me to also study Marketing, Advertising, and Marketing Management so I could offer my clients a complete, professional, and well-rounded experience. Today, through JD Creative, we provide printing services, embroidery, custom uniforms, large-format printing, and vehicle wrapping. Our goal is to give clients everything they need in one place, and because we operate as a full production facility with all our machines in-house, we can deliver fast, reliable results. We understand how important time is for our clients, so it becomes equally important for us. The main problems we solve are delivering on time, providing great customer service, and ensuring every client feels truly valued. People may forget a price, but they never forget how you treated them, and that philosophy guides our entire business. If anything ever goes wrong with a product if something lifts, peels, or gets damaged we always honor our guarantee and make it right. This commitment is why we have had loyal, returning clients for 12 years. I am incredibly proud of my team; we support each other, we care about the quality of every final product, and we work in an environment that truly feels like family. We consider each other family to the point that even our children call each other cousins. JD Creative is built on passion, teamwork, responsibility, and heart, and our goal is always to make sure our clients feel happy, supported, and confident in everything we create for them.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
I believe I have had to start from zero more than once in my life. I have changed direction, reinvented myself, and begun again when it felt like everything was lost. Yet in each of those moments, the comeback was always stronger than the fall. Every setback propelled me forward, almost like falling onto a trampoline and rising even higher. Each fall taught me a powerful lesson: nothing can truly break me. I learned that fear should never stop us, because the worst that can happen is falling and then getting back up. But at least you tried. At least you fought. At least you gave yourself the chance.
One of my hardest lessons came when I sold my apartment in Venezuela and invested everything into a restaurant. I stepped away from my career to pursue a new project, believing it would lead to growth. Instead, due to poor management, I lost everything and watched the project collapse.
With time, I realized that even that fall was a blessing. In that space, I met people who later helped me return to my true path selling menus and reconnecting with the work I love. Today, I understand that some of the hardest moments in life are not endings, but bridges that lead us exactly where we are meant to be.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
One of the most important lessons I had to leave behind was the belief that I had to do everything on my own to succeed. For a long time, I thought that the more I worked and the more I carried, the stronger I was. Over time, I realized that this mindset only led to exhaustion. I learned that asking for help is not a weakness and that setting boundaries does not mean giving up. I also understood that moving forward does not always mean moving faster, but moving with intention. Knowing when to pause, when to delegate, and when to take care of my energy completely changed the way I work and lead.
Letting go of control was not easy, especially as an entrepreneur and a mother, but once I did, my business began to grow in a healthier way. My team became stronger, the work environment improved, and the quality of what we deliver increased.
Today, I understand that consistency is not about doing everything alone, but about showing up with purpose and allowing others to grow with you. This lesson taught me that success is not measured by how much you can carry, but by how wisely you choose to move forward.
