We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jenny Grace a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Jenny , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
I knew I wanted to do this pretty early on. I began writing when I was in high school and started to turn some poetry into songs when I got to college. I took a different path than most artists, I enlisted at 17 to serve my country and would continue to two deployments before attending college and making music a reality.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I got into the music business by accident. I tried to avoid it for years, but synchronicities kept happening and bringing me back to Nashville. I realized my writing abilities from a young age as it was always my strongest subject in school. I knew I could sing since the age of 14 but I did not take it seriously to pursue until I was out of college and in the professional world.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
I became fond of the music business when I realized how I could touch other people’s hearts with my music. I have had people write to me over the years about how my musical journey has inspired them to pursue their dreams or to overcome difficulties in their lives. I have seen some fans show up to concerts driving over 200 miles. It is really inspiring to see that and to know how the power of music can touch people’s lives. This drives me to continue to write songs and play shows as I see the positive affect it can have on others.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
I had an early set back like most artists when I signed to a record label that promised me the world and did not deliver. They kept two of my songs forever and did nothing with my music for years. I am blessed to have been free of of the contract now due to some very good attorneys. I realized some people in this industry thrive off the success of others and decide to not do the right thing in order to benefit themselves. There are many sharks in this business so I feel I had to learn a hard lesson so as to not make the same mistake again and to warn other artists of the predators that exist in the industry who are out to hurt artists rather than help them. Many artists have dealt with this, including Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Billy Joel. Doja Cat, and other modern country pop artists who I do not wish to list here.
