Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jenny Dean. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Jenny, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today So, naming is such a challenge. How did you come up with the name of your brand?
It was 2007, and I had no idea what I was doing. I bought a website in a “buy one, get one” deal. So I figured I would make the second website about Ragdoll cats because I so loved my cat at the time. And so I searched keywords and found “Floppycats” to work well…and went with it. I am so glad that I did.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’m Jenny Dean, the founder and cat lover behind Floppycats. I have had a Ragdoll cat in my life since 1987.
In 2007, I left my corporate job to pursue working for myself without a true concrete plan. I mean, I thought I had one at the time, but I didn’t.
I created Floppycats in late 2007 when I signed up for another website. And it was a buy one, get one free deal.
I didn’t launch Floppycats until 2008 with the intention of wanting to connect with Ragdoll cat lovers worldwide.
Fifteen years later, Floppycats is that – a worldwide community of cat lovers, but my mission has changed in the process, as I have learned from readers what they need. Now, my goal is to help cat owners live harmoniously with their cats. Whether that’s understanding cat behavior better, finding the best cat products, figuring out the best cat diet, finding the best products to clean your house with that are pet safe, awareness of toxic chemicals, and more that are lurking in our homes, in our furniture, in our carpets, in cleaning, personal hygiene products and more.
Floppycats’ product reviews are the most thorough and honest product reviews you’ll find. Before accepting a product for review, I research it online to make sure I think we will have a positive experience with it. Once I receive the product, an unboxing video is posted introducing the product to my audience. Then I take 4-8 weeks to review the product – I use it daily like someone would if they were to buy it from Amazon, Chewy, etc. I don’t think having a product for a week and reviewing it is fair. It’s not fair to the manufacturer who worked so hard to bring it to the market, nor is it fair to Floppycats’ readers who spend their hard-earned money on products. During that 4-8 week review, I might post more videos or photos of the product on Floppycats’ social media to share thoughts, discoveries, and more. Oftentimes, after our unboxing videos, readers will buy the product, so during the review process, they can engage in our review process on social media.
Of all the things Floppycats, our community is what I value the most. Cat owners helping cat owners. One story I am most proud of involved a woman and her cat who had moved to the United States from Scotland. The woman had two children under the age of 2.5, and her cat of 5 or 6 years was having diarrhea constantly. She hadn’t changed its food, etc. She was looking to rehome the cat because the constant diarrhea plus the kids was just too much. After many questions, it was discovered that her mother-in-law, who lived with them in the USA, liked to use plug-in “air fresheners” that are highly toxic to cats. They did not have the plug-in “air fresheners” in their home in Scotland. Once the air-fresheners were removed, the cat stopped having diarrhea. So he got to stay with his family and his owner didn’t have to make the gut-wrenching decision to rehome him.

Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
Growth year over year isn’t always guaranteed. Never get comfortable with where you are – always reach for more if your goal is growth.
As a blogger/influencer, you have multiple income streams (usually). Certain income streams might be higher than others, for example. But one change in Google’s algorithm or YouTube’s search results can change all of that instantly, so it’s best to always have a diversified income stream without having too many eggs in one basket.

We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
As an entrepreneur, you often do not have guaranteed income. Some years might be stronger than others, so you have to learn not to rely on the same income yearly. I had several great years and then a few bad ones – and had to go back to operating like I did when I first got started. It’s always a humbling experience to fall back down – but it’s those that get back up that make it.
