We were lucky to catch up with Jenny Castillo recently and have shared our conversation below.
Jenny , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to hear the backstory of how you established your own practice.
Starting a business or practice from scratch is never easy. The biggest advice I can offer anybody getting ready to take this leap is to lean into uncomfortable moments! Starting your own practice requires you to meet new people and acquire new skills. Marketing, website designing, and finding funds are not taught extensively, if at all, during clinical programs. By leaning into uncomfortable moments I grew in professionalism but also made connections with individuals who have helped to build the practice in one way or another.

Jenny , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Jenny Castillo, M.S, Registered Mental Health Counselor Intern. I am the founder of Empowered Mental Health, LLC a counseling practice for children, adolescents, adults, and couples. Mental health is multidimensional and encompasses many areas of our lives. At EMH we focus on wellness and use evidenced based approaches to promote positive mental health. My approach to counseling is person centered in nature. I have a strong belief in everyone’s capacity to live fulfilling lives no matter how stuck one may feel today. As we work together, you’ll find that I use a collaborative approach to achieve therapeutic goals. I’ll focus on your strengths to help convert insight into meaningful action in a safe and non-judgmental environment.

We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
It must be perfect. Unlearning perfectionism has been important because it is an impossible goal to achieve. Our ideas, our talent, and our offerings deserve to be seen and shared even if they’re not perfect. Perfectionism for me is rooted in my childhood, somewhere along the lines after getting praised for perfect grades, behaviors, etc. I learned that it is only acceptable if it is perfect.
If you could go back, would you choose the same profession, specialty, etc.?
100% yes! So far I love what I do and could not see myself working in another field. As a counselor I have the ability to provide mental health awareness in many different ways. Through one-one sessions, webinars, group sessions, and media.
