We were lucky to catch up with Jennifer Willen recently and have shared our conversation below.

In the fast-paced world we live in, finding moments of creativity and connection becomes essential, especially when it comes to building a lasting legacy for our families. One profound way to achieve this is through the magical world of art. My Company Simply Southern Crafts does not limit itself to one certain type of work. Anything is possible.

Jennifer, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?

I’m Jennifer Lyndsey, and I’m here to share my story of turning passion into purpose, navigating challenges, and finding solace in the world of crafting. From Journalist to Crafter:
Before I embarked on this crafting adventure, my life was filled with the hustle and bustle of the newsroom. From The Weather Channel to FOX, CBS, NBC, and ABC, I lived and breathed the fast-paced world of digital journalism in Atlanta, Georgia. Little did I know that life had other plans for me.

Turning Challenges into Opportunities:
In November 2021, my world changed when my son Jacob was diagnosed with autism. As a determined mother, I decided to turn my crafting hobby into a small business to contribute financially to Jacob’s needs. But life threw another curveball in March 2021 – I was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS). The very nature of my previous career, with its high-paced environment, crazy hours, and stress, became potential triggers for MS relapses.
Second Diagnosis
My path took another surprising turn in August 2023 when I was diagnosed with Her 2 + Breast Cancer. The news was a shock, but it didn’t stop me. I chose to embrace the role of a warrior, slowing down my work but never allowing it to come to a halt.

A Pause for Healing:
​Completing chemotherapy in December marked a significant milestone. The strength within me and the incredible support around me became evident. In January 2024, I underwent a double mastectomy—a courageous step on my healing journey. Each day brings new challenges, but I’ve come to understand that every step forward is a victory in itself.

In the face of economic challenges, creators have the opportunity to showcase resilience, flexibility, and innovation. By understanding the impact of inflation, communicating value effectively, and adapting strategies, creators can navigate these challenges and continue to provide valuable, unique, and impactful services to their clients. I tell my clients I will work with any budget. We can find something in your range – that is always my goal.

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?

Over the past five years, life threw its share of challenges my way – from the joyous arrival of two beautiful children to the unexpected battles with multiple sclerosis and breast cancer. Through it all, I slowed down but never gave up on my passion for creation.

Creativity became my sanctuary, a source of strength, and a reminder that resilience resides within each of us. Amidst treatments and moments of slowing down, I found solace and joy in the act of creating.

Heartfelt gratitude to my incredible clients who demonstrated unwavering patience and understanding during this journey. Your support has been a beacon of light, allowing me to continue doing what I love.

This journey has taught me valuable lessons – the power of a supportive community, the importance of celebrating small victories, and the beauty of finding strength in creativity.

Today, I share this story not as a tale of struggle, but as a testament to the indomitable spirit that resides within us all. Challenges can be transformed into opportunities for growth, and creativity has the power to light even the darkest paths.
