We recently connected with Jennifer Wauhob and have shared our conversation below.
Jennifer, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What’s been the best thing you’ve ever seen (or done yourself) to show a customer that you appreciate them?
My favorite thing about my job is that I get to continue taking care of my clients long after the transaction is over. Gifts are my love language, so it only makes sense that gift-giving is one of the ways I show clients I appreciate them. From little things like sending cookies to celebrate a special occasion, to hosting events where our clients can pick up a complimentary thanksgiving pie or a hot dinner the night before school starts, we love spoiling the people who support our business!
Jennifer, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
After graduating college, I taught middle school for about 6 years. My first exposure to the real estate world was when we went through the process of buying our first home. We loved our Realtor and I remember I was just fascinated watching her do her job. I could see that was she was doing was actually really similar to teaching in a lot of ways: it was about breaking down a complicated transaction into a simple step by step process. At the end of the day both teaching and being a Realtor are about helping people, and that’s what I love to do.
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
I know that new business owners hate to hear this, but our best source of business is referrals from our past clients. It is a long grind to build to a place where your business becomes mostly repeat and referrals, so I always tell newer agents not to give up. It’s kind of like pushing a giant snowball up a hill. It slowly gets bigger and bigger and then there is a tipping point where it becomes a whole lot easier. You just have to stick with it!
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
The turnover rate in my industry is extremely high. The majority of people who get their real estate license are out of the business within the first 2 years. And if you do make it past that point, it’s still an industry that is dominated by the top producers. Roughly 90% of the business is done by the top 10% of the agents out there. I remember starting out in a training class with 6 other agents from my office and within 6 months half of them were gone, by the end of the 2nd year I was the only one still standing. I truly believe I was not any smarter, more connected or more talented than anyone else, the only difference is that I refused to quit. I think there are so many people out there who give up on things RIGHT before they are about have success. Perseverance is probably the single most important attribute for an entrepreneur.
