We were lucky to catch up with Jennifer Wakeman recently and have shared our conversation below.
Jennifer, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Can you tell us the backstory behind how you came up with the idea?
Even before my husband and I got married, we loved to travel. It used to be to cities just an hour or two away, but we loved to explore different places. As we grew in our careers, we earned more money and were able to expand our travels. I’d post about our adventures on Facebook and our family and friends would always share that they loved seeing our travels and thought we went to very unique places. As we ramped up our travels, I mentioned to my dad that I wanted to explore Europe and the world, but it was very expensive. He shared that we have so much here, in the PNW, that is unique and exciting to see. When COVID hit, we stuck with staying in our area and exploring outdoor places that we’ve never been to, That’s when I finally put it all together and created Unique PNW, a place to share the wonderous places in the Pacific Northwest that are truly captivating. I want people to see that you don’t have to travel across the world to experience something unique, you can do it right in your own backyard.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I created Unique PNW first as an Instagram page to showcase the details of unique places to stay, do, and see in our corner of the US. I love that I am able to provide free content and ideas to people who are not only local in our area, but who would love to visit and see the beauty we have here. I then created a free website for Unique PNW so I could provide more in depth blogs on the places we’ve visited to truly capture each place so everyone could see how amazing our places to stay are!
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
My true goal is to show people the incredible things that the PNW has to offer, beyond the typical places that come to mind like Seattle and Portland. There are so many cities and places that do not get recognition for the unique things they offer and often overlooked. I want to spread a light on these communities so that people in the area can see how special things are right where they live!
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
I love when someone visits someplace new because they saw it on my post. When someone shares that they had no clue a place existed near them and that they decided to visit, it is the BEST feeling! I feel like I am helping others create amazing memories and a new sense of adventure while also helping local businesses and local people as they earn more business.
