We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jennifer Viton a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Jennifer , appreciate you joining us today. So, naming is such a challenge. How did you come up with the name of your brand?
Liv for Cakes originated after I had my daughter Olivia. I wanted to incorporate her into my business. I do it all for her.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Jennifer and Ive owned Liv for Cakes Miami for the last 5 years. Pre law studen turned baker! after working in law for almost 8 years I decided to turn my hobby into a lifestyle and i never looked back! I actually first got into the industry baking baked goods for dogs! I was in a large frenchie dog group and i’d make all these cute cakes and cookies and people kept telling me I should bake for people too! It was like a light switch went off! I started baking for friends and family and the word spread quickly! Might of been my guava cake that made my bakery grow the way it did ! I’d be no where without the friends and family and loyal customer who stuck with me over the years when I could barely frost a cake! It took years of practice and error, long nights and exchanging night outs for baking. Im most proud of myself for how far i’ve come in my craft despite working long nights after my daughter went to bed.
I do all cakes as small as cake smashes and all the way to weddings which have quickly become my favorite. I’ve recently found my style is modern cake design and I can’t wait to dip my hands more into that.
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
I think in the food industry word of mouth and social media is the most effective ! 60% of my work comes from referral and the other 40% from instagram and facebook!
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
I think once I got pregnant and had my daughter I definitely had to pivot life and my career. I decided I was going to be a stay at home mom and raise my daughter and bake on the side. My Bakery did have a small downfall but within 2 months of my daughter being born I was back in kitchen and baking. I was mommy during the day and baker at night. haha!
