We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jennifer Tra a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Jennifer, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
It was all very much self directed learning at first. If I was years back in time, I’d tell myself to immediately find a coach who could guide me and practice, practice, practice!
The most essential skills to have were not what most would think at first — communication and networking were and still are key to sustaining my career. Second is acting, and third is being able to be creative and take direction.
Money stood in the way of pursuing my career. Education, equipment, and time cost money!
Jennifer, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’m a voice-actress! Meaning I provide vocals for commercials, promos, audiobooks, dubs, cartoons, and more. If you’ve ever heard of a commercial on TV with someone talking — trying to sell something to you, or explaining something, that’s my job.
I like to think that I’m providing voices and being the voice for others who otherwise can’t share their story. For me, this job is all about story telling. I’m here to speak on behalf of others, while sharing my own experiences through my voice.
What probably sets me apart is that I’m also a musician, and animal rescuer on the side! So I have high empathy and creative juices that allow me to never want to stop doing what I do. I’m most proud of the satisfaction I can bring to my clients, especially when they feel like I’m the right voice for their story.
If I had to tell my fans/clients/followers one thing about my brand — it’s that I care! I care about the Earth. I care about animals. I care about people. I care about stories. And that’s what drives me to continue to do this. I care.
Any resources you can share with us that might be helpful to other creatives?
I wish I knew about NAVA, the National Association of Voice Actors, and GVAA, Gravy for the Brain. They’re both organizations that help fellow voice actors thrive and fly in their careers. They would have been a great help starting out!
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
I had to unlearn the old philosophy – “Be seen, not heard.” Growing up in a strict household and in a society that wants obedience, it was really hard to unlearn that my voice didn’t matter. I am so much better off now that I’ve freed myself
From that mindset. Everyone has a voice. And everyone matters.
