We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Jennifer Norman. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Jennifer below.
Alright, Jennifer thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to hear about the things you feel your parents did right and how those things have impacted your career and life.
They taught me to be kind, always! Throughout my career I have met so many different people from different walks of life. Being a photographer, I photograph these people during some of the most wonderful moments of their lives. I’ve listened to them talk about how businesses have turned them away because of their views, color of their skin, cultures, etc. and for me I could never imagine treating a person differently for who they are. My parents literally gave the shirts off their backs for people they hardly knew while I was growing up and I couldn’t imagine living any other way. I want to capture people in all their forms and walks of life.
Jennifer, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I honestly never imagined myself being a photographer. I thought I was supposed to be a teacher and even started my degree as one. I ended up changing my degree to business though after learning that teaching was not for me. I wasn’t someone who was born with a camera in their hands. I literally picked one up and said, “this looks fun.” Started interning with some studios and really started liking it.
I live for moments. I cry during every daddy-daughter dance at a wedding and I cry even bigger tears when a mama holds her new infant for the first time. Having the honor to capture those moments makes my career even more than what I could imagine it to be. I do primarily weddings, but most of the time my clients come back when they decide to start a family or celebrate their one year anniversary and for me that is where the reward comes in. When I’m behind the camera I prefer the flow of letting the session take it’s own course. Direction is one thing, but when you’re caught in the moment, THAT is what makes the photo. I want to capture your moments and the goal for me is to become your photographer for life.
When it comes to planning out your session we will discuss everything. Outfits, locations, your wishes, and anything specific that I need to know about you and anyone involved in the session. I do provide a small client closet for the women involved in a session as well, especially maternity. I feel this helps my clients in a big way.
I feel that customer service skills are my number one. I want you to be comfortable from the moment we start chatting about booking. I want to be your friend and not just a photographer you hire once and then don’t come back. Whether you’re booking for the first time or the 10th time, I always want the experience and quality to be top notch. Photos last a lifetime and should be treated as such.
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
Referring back to my customer service comment. Truthfully, it goes a long way. Why? Because of referrals and word of mouth. When you listen to your client’s wishes and make them feel as if they are your only client it really does come back to you ten fold. I really don’t market much at all because I don’t have to. My loyal clients help me with that and I’m truly grateful for it.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
What’s so rewarding for me is delivering a wedding gallery and hearing, “you truly captured the day and we love reliving it.” I love being able to capture such precious times in peoples lives no matter what it may be.
