Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jennifer Ngo & Sara Murphy Owners. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Jennifer Ngo & Sara Murphy, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Let’s start with a story that highlights an important way in which your brand diverges from the industry standard.
Our business was built on our love of cookies & baking first, but a close second to that is the idea of providing a thoughtful and elevated product that brings a little joy (and sweetness)!
From the very beginning it has been important to us that not only were our cookies delicious, but that they were presented in a more sophisticated way. When our customers order cookies from our website, they come individually packaged and nestled in tissue paper in one of our bakery boxes. In addition, customers can add a customized card (blank, birthday, or thank you) and a bow to top it off. Ultimately this creates the full gift experience for the recipients of our cookies.
One of our principle beliefs is that food is a universal language and cookies can communicate so many things like love, sympathy, celebration or just because!
Jennifer Ngo & Sara Murphy, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
We became friends in 2010, and though we knew that we each loved to cook and bake, it wasn’t until a volunteer retreat in 2017 that we realized we had the same dream of opening our own bakery. This realization led us into the process of brainstorming ideas, talking about dreams and setting goals. One year later, The Flour Shop was born.
We believe that food is a universal language, and cookies say “I love you”. It’s our hope that through our made-with-love cookies and beautiful packaging, our customers will be able to send a little love to the very special people in their lives.
We have poured our love and creative energy into crafting a business that serves our customers and brings a little joy into our community.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
We take a lot of pride in our customer service and the connections we build with our customers. We personally respond to every email, social media message, Google review, etc. It has always been our goal to make our customers feel like we are accessible to answer their questions, make corrections, fill special requests, etc. We personally run our social media, we share some of our personal lives with our customers because we want them to feel a connection to us.
Our business is about so much more than just selling cookies. We want to provide an overall experience to our customers that leaves them feeling good and knowing that every time they are spending their money on Flour Shop cookies, they are impacting our business and our lives and that doesn’t go unnoticed or unappreciated.
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
Providing an excellent, consistent product and experience to our current client base. Our business has grown organically (and slowly) over the last 6 years. We chose not to take out any loans when we started our business, so the growth had to happen naturally as we grew our customer and social media base.
Since a large percentage of the orders we fill are gifts to other people, that has been one of the best ways to grow our clientele. We often hear from new customers who say that they received our cookies from a friend or family member, and now they are purchasing cookies for someone else in their life.
We’ve also had great success growing our clientele through our wholesale customers. We have about 10 wholesale customers around Denver and have gained many new clients who have found our product through other businesses.
