We were lucky to catch up with Jennifer Mosblech recently and have shared our conversation below.
Jennifer , appreciate you joining us today. Let’s start with the story of your mission. What should we know?
At Moss & Black Salon, our heart beats to a different rhythm. It’s not just about fabulous hair and spa treatments; it’s about crafting a space where everyone who walks in feels seen, heard, and cherished. This vision started in my childhood, the memories I have of watching the joy my mom created with just her scissors and warm smiles. That’s where my journey began, and it’s the foundation of everything Moss & Black stands for today.
For me, the connection that blossoms between a stylist and their client is special, and many people would agree. It’s not only about changing how someone looks — that is such a small part — it’s about touching their life, even if just for a moment, in a profound and positive way. That feeling is addicting and is what sparked the dream that would become Moss & Black — a place where beauty is beyond the physical; it’s more about touching hearts, uplifting spirits, and creating an escape from the everyday stresses of our world.
Our mission is deeply personal. It’s about creating an authentic, warm, and inclusive community. In a world that often prioritizes surface over substance, we strive to be a unique sanctuary of escape, realness, and indulgent self-care. Here, beauty is an expression of who you are and where your confidence blooms inner strength. We’re about nurturing not just the outer self but feeding the soul, too.
Beyond our salon doors, we extend our hands and hearts to the wider community, embodying our belief that true beauty involves giving back and supporting one another. From local charity work to fundraising efforts, we’re committed to making a positive impact.
Moss & Black is more than a salon; it’s my lifelong dream realized, a journey of connection, women’s empowerment, and community. Our mission is the essence of our brand, guiding us to continually challenge the norms and enrich, nurture, and grow every life we touch, client and employee alike, in a positive way.
So, when you step into Moss & Black, know that you’re stepping into a story—a story of love, passion, determination, and a whole lot of hustle. We’re here to do more than just beautify. We’re here to share sweet moments, create beauty, and build strong bonds.
Welcome to our world.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My journey into the world of beauty started when I was a child childhood, deeply influenced by my mother, an also a hairdresser. From an early age, I was amazed by the transformative power of hairstyling—not just in the way it changed appearances but in how it lifted spirits and built confidence. I was inspired by this, I pursued a career in hairdressing, looking to blend my love of art with personal connections.
In 2021, I opened Moss & Black Salon in the charming town of Waxhaw, NC. The salon is an embodiment of my dream to create a truly unique space that offers more than just beauty services—it’s a place for community, connection, and self-care. At Moss & Black, we provide an extensive range of services, including innovative hair coloring techniques, expert cuts, and a spectrum of spa treatments that cater to both aesthetic needs and holistic well-being.
Our approach is what sets us apart. We view beauty through a lens of inclusivity and personalization, ensuring that each client’s experience is tailored to their unique needs and preferences. Our team of skilled stylists and beauticians are not just technicians; they are caretakers of our clients’ self-esteem and wellness.
The problems we solve for our clients extend beyond typical hair issues. We address the need for a nurturing space where clients can unwind, feel valued, and be part of a community that celebrates authentic beauty. Our salon is designed to be a sanctuary from the stresses of everyday life, where clients can rejuvenate not just their looks but their spirits.
One of the things I’m most proud of is our commitment to community involvement. We actively participate in local charity events, from feeding the homeless to supporting women in crisis. This sense of giving back is integral to the ethos of Moss & Black—it reflects our belief that beauty is not just about looking good but doing good.
For potential clients, followers, and fans, I want you to know that Moss & Black is more than a salon—it’s a movement towards more thoughtful, conscious beauty practices. Our mission is to ensure every person who walks through our doors leaves feeling better, not just about their appearance, but about their place in the world.
Whether you’re looking for a stylist who can understand and enhance your unique style or seeking a tranquil retreat from the demands of daily life, Moss & Black is here to welcome you with open arms. Join us, and experience the difference of a salon that cares about more than just hair.
Any advice for managing a team?
When it comes to managing a team and keeping everyone motivated, I believe it all starts with the culture you cultivate. At Moss & Black, we’ve created an environment where respect and support aren’t just expected, they’re woven into everything we do. This isn’t by accident—it’s a choice to ensure our salon feels like a second home, not just for our team but also for our clients.
We prioritize mutual respect and make sure compassion guides our leadership. It’s about more than just being bosses; it’s about being real leader who cares. Regular team outings, annual beach trips, are just part of how we celebrate and bond. It’s these moments away from the salon floor that help us gel together as a team.
So, you can feel the vibe at Moss & Black. There’s a genuine peace that greets you at the door. This atmosphere—this energy—can’t be bought at a store or really duplicated. It’s carefully nurtured within and while it takes work, believe me, it’s worth every effort because our clients can feel it too.
I also make a point to connect with each team member one-on-one. Understanding their dreams, goals and their hardships helps me support them not just as professionals but as people that I truly love. I’m here to help each person thrive, and their success fuels the whole salon’s success.
My aim has always been to shake things up in the salon industry, challenging how things are typically done for the benefit of both our clients and our team. At Moss & Black, we’re doing things differently, and we’re proud of it. This culture we’ve built—it’s a vibe, a movement, and it’s something you just have to experience.
Can you open up about a time when you had a really close call with the business?
Starting Moss & Black was one heck of a rollercoaster. I dreamt of a salon that felt like home—a cozy spot where everyone would walk in and instantly feel the warmth. Excited, I found a place and went all in, buying all the salon equipment we’d need. Then, out of nowhere, the deal fell apart, and there I was with no salon but lots of salon furniture and a hefty credit card bill.
Freaking out on the inside I had to tell my husband, this was tough—I was worried, but he didn’t even flinch. His support was rock-solid, and honestly, that helped me keep my head up.
As I chipped away at the debt, thanks to a year of zero interest, and paid it off in full right at the time I stumbled upon another location. And wouldn’t you know it? It was even better than the first. During those stressful times I had to remind myself that ‘God always has a better plan, and what sometimes seems like a set back is really a set up for something better. Starting a business is not easy there are always twists in store for us that can turn out to be blessings in disguise.
Looking back, every step—even those backward ones—were part of a bigger picture. Today, Moss & Black isn’t just my dream come true; it’s a reminder that with a little faith and a lot of elbow grease, things work out the way they’re supposed to. And now, our salon is exactly that dream spot I imagined, a place that feels like a warm hug, proving that sometimes, the best is definitely worth the wait.
