We were lucky to catch up with Jennifer Mitchell recently and have shared our conversation below.
Jennifer, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Let’s start with the decision of whether to donate a percentage of sales to an organization or cause – we’d love to hear the backstory of how you thought through this.
A portion of our proceeds at Hush Aesthetic go directly to supporting The Rustin Luther Foundation. Our staff donate their time as well to provide services for The Rustin Luther Foundation.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My road to becoming an esthetician is a long and winding one filled with heartbreak and triumph.
I always knew I wanted to work in the beauty and health care industry. I was told at a young age that the beauty industry “wasn’t a real job” so I ended up going to college in an unrelated field and got an office job. I hated it. Absolutely hated it. By that point I was a divorced mother to 3 kids so going back to school wasn’t an option for me. This is also a good time to mention that I had terrible acne as a kid/teen. I was raised by a single dad who didn’t know a thing about makeup and YouTube wasn’t even a thought at that time, so I had no where to turn. I would often sit in my bathroom and put rubbing alcohol on my face and cry because I would have given anything to get rid of the pimples and have clear skin. I’m not sure many people understand what pimples do to teens confidence and feelings of self worth, but it absolutely trashes it.
As life changes I found myself in a relationship with a man who would change the trajectory of my life. His name was Rustin Luther. He owned a music venue and because of that I was able to quit my day job and buy a bar, The Home Plate off Alta Mere Dr, which I have now owned for 7 years. About a year and a half after I bought the bar he was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer. I struggled to keep it together. I had three kids from a previous marriage and together him and I had a one year old son. He lived for 18 months after the diagnoses. It’s hard to describe that point in my life. He was very well known throughout the DFW area and often times me and my decisions were tried in the public eye. It was traumatic.
I almost lost my house and my bar, I definitely lost friends. But I soldiered on.
After his death I met my husband Randy. He saw past all the brokenness and helped me put my life back together. I’d told Randy at some point of my dream to become an esthetician and his words to me: I will help you do whatever I can to make it happen. And he did just that, and for that I am forever grateful.
At 34 I went back to school and got my esthetic license. I knew that I wanted to help people suffering with acne but now I had a new mission to add to it; cancer patients.
Immediately after I received my license I went to laser school and set out to receive my Oncology in Esthetics certification. From that, The Rustin Luther Foundation was born.
The Rustin Luther Foundation is a privately owned entity that I own, where I provide free and low cost skincare services for cancer patients, their families, and cancer survivors. Clients are provided with 5 free full sized oncology safe skincare products and facials to address all their concerns. Chemotherapy and radiation are so hard on the skin, and skincare can be so difficult to navigate during that time. Caretakers for cancer patients can also come in and enjoy a complementary relaxation facial. Unfortunately I know all too well how often caretakers can feel so alone being on a cancer journey with their loved one, and even if it’s just for 60 minutes, I want them to know that they are valued and they are not alone.
Of course all this is made possible by Hush Aesthetics. I co-own Hush Aesthetics with Ingrid Hinojosa, Nurse Practitioner. A portion of the income we receive from our clients at Hush funds The Rustin Luther Foundation.
I’m extremely proud of the work we do at Hush. We employee two licensed estheticians and between all of us we provide a plethora of services. Ingrid focuses on men and women’s sexual wellness, as well as hormone replacement therapy, regenerative medicine, and of course botox and fillers. I focus on acne boot camp, corrective skincare (Microneedling, chemical peels, corrective laser), Hydrafacials, and laser hair removal. Kendall focuses on lashes, waxing, and he is totally a brow wizard! And our newest esthetician is Monica, she is a certified permanent makeup artist and focuses on Hydrafacials and acne care.
The thing I’m most proud of is our acne bootcamp. I’ll have to share some pictures with you because my words just don’t do justice. We offer acne care at a low price because we want it to be affordable to everyone. Adults – teens – the program is for everyone and you do not have to suffer with acne. A lot of our clients have spent hundreds and hundreds of dollars on products and services that have not yielded any results, and I’m proud to say that we have had a 100% success rate.
It’s been a long journey to get where I’m at today, but I am so proud of the work I’ve accomplished and the work we continue to accomplish at Hush Aesthetics as a team. It’s an indescribable feeling to have found my calling, and being able to give back. Being able to change peoples lives and boost their self confidence is truly an honor.
Can you tell us the story behind how you met your business partner?
I met Ingrid in esthetics school. She is an amazing woman who has been on a mission to help others as well. After I’d told her about my plans to start The Rustin Luther Foundation she offered to be my medical oversight. She really helped me get started and I really owe her a lot of thanks for that. Originally we were operating under our own entities and she really supported me while I built up my clientele. Eventually we decided that it made more sense to join forces, so we merged our companies and began operating as Hush Aesthetics, a new and upcoming MedSpa.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
Shortly after I graduated and got my Oncology in Esthetics certification, covid hit. That was a double whammy for me because both my spa and my bar were shut down. We pushed through that time and got to moving along.
We moved into a little 2 room office space that we renovated on our dime only to outgrow that space quickly. We opted to move to the 6 room suite next door that was available and again renovated on our dime. We’d been there and operational for maybe 30 days and then the great freeze of 2021 happened. While we were snowed in for a week, and I was 9 months pregnant and a week past my due date, multiple pipes burst in our spa and just completely destroyed the building, our furnature, all of our files… it was devastating.
Our landlords opted not to fix the damage within a timeframe that would get us working again, so we were forced to move. From there we moved into a few different places that were either one room locations or just not the right fit for us, but we soldiered on. We eventually found our forever home and are in the process of renovating again. Only this time, our amazingly wonderful landlord is undertaking that task for us and has shown us what it’s like to have a landlord on our side.
I always joke that our clients are the real troopers here. They’ve been on this rollercoaster of a journey with us and if it weren’t for them, there would be no us.
We are located at 3600 Hulen St. B-3, Fort Worth, TX 76107.
