Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jennifer McCall. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Jennifer, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Let’s start with the story of your mission. What should we know?
My family went through a tough time when I was just fifteen. My dad’s health was failing, and my parents’ marriage suffered for a number of reasons. My mom had an affair. My dad went to confront the boyfriend, not knowing his wife was there. My dad took the clip out, but there was a bullet in the chamber. The wife tackled my dad, and the gun went off through her face. The boyfriend grabbed a knife, and after a struggle, my dad stabbed the man. I was a pregnant teenager at the time, translating for my mom who didn’t speak English well, and we were dismissed by several attorneys until we found an attorney who cared and listened to us. I want to be that attorney for a family in need of someone who is willing to listen to the whole story and to fight to tell that story. I went through a tough divorce at 21, and I swore I would never practice family law, but I quickly realized that that is where I had the greatest impact because of my own tough personal experiences.
Jennifer, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Because I went through my own tough divorce, I understand what clients are going through. I had one client tell me that I am a giant heart that sprouted arms and legs. I also fight zealously for my clients. I had a client describe me as a pit bull in a poodle body.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
I was a teen mom. Fewer than 2% of teen moms graduate college before age 30. I couldn’t find the statistic for teen moms graduating law school, but I imagine it’s low. I’m very proud of how far I’ve come, and I always use my story to encourage others to continue striving for their dreams.
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
I don’t advertise. The best source of new clients is old clients. I am always so honored when an old client hires me again, or when new clients find me based on old clients’ recommendations. I also get referrals from other attorneys, court reporters, and interpreters. I am always honored by people’s trust in me.
