We were lucky to catch up with Jennifer Mahan recently and have shared our conversation below.
Jennifer, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
My very first job at 15 years old was at a photography studio. I was immediately hooked! Being able to capture memories for individuals and families that will be cherished for a lifetime is an incredible honor. I enjoyed getting to know each client, learn their story and portray their personality through imagery. I knew this was something I was meant to do, connecting with people. It’s such a special gift to be able to make a stand against time, hold it still if only for a moment and be able to revisit it over and over again.

Jennifer, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’ve been in this industry for over 25 years. When I started in photography it was only film so you had to really work on your skill to ensure every shot was perfect. We didn’t get the luxury of seeing the image immediately, correcting it and reshooting. I feel like what sets me apart is that experience. I’ve been able to grow my talents with the improvement of technology. Buying a camera doesn’t make you a photographer anymore than buying a stethoscope makes you a doctor. You learn to bend light, capture shadows, and show true emotion through your lens. It’s an intimate relationship between three people, the photographer, the subject and the viewer.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
The best advice I can offer on building your business is 100% based on honest practices, fair pricing and most importantly customer relationships. The majority of my clients started out as just that and we became close friends. And through the years they have been repeatedly using my services and always recommending my services to friends and family. Building a strong clientele means offering value within your business. Appreciation to those whole support you fully and celebrate your successes.

Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
I make sure to continually engage my social media audience with posts, client loyalty rewards and incentives. You must learn the market and develop ways to uniquely set your work apart from others. Brand recognition is important to remain consistent and potential clients know your style and exactly what level of experience you offer.
