Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jennifer Ly. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Jennifer, appreciate you joining us today. Let’s start with something countless entrepreneurs have had to figure out on the fly – how have you dealt with the rise of remote work?
Our team works remotely, which can sometimes lead to feelings of isolation compared to being in a physical office. To combat this, we’ve fostered an environment of daily communication through chats and Zoom meetings. Constant communication is crucial, and organizing how we communicate is equally important. Initially, using chat was quick and convenient, but we soon realized the need for organization. We now segment chats into various topics vital to our organization, ensuring that our communication is structured and efficient.
Jennifer, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My background is in finance, specifically banking. Ten years ago, I decided to leave the corporate world to become independent. Leaving a six-figure salary, I faced challenges adjusting to the ups and downs of being an entrepreneur. I stumbled many times, experiencing highs and lows until it all came together. Beyond the financial aspect, grit determines success. I wanted to give up many times, and I’m glad I didn’t. Don’t give up! You will fail countless times until you fail less and less. Throughout my journey, I stayed true to my finance and insurance background. I now run a full-service agency offering no-cost, no-obligation consultations on all things insurance-related and financial planning. Our main passion is helping seniors, individuals, and business owners with their health insurance and Medicare. Though this can seem complicated to those not in the industry, we simplify the process with our “we are your advocate” service.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
A few years ago, I made a significant investment in marketing for my business by hosting workshops. Instead of using my customary vendors, I decided to manage the campaign with my in-house resources. This decision proved detrimental, as the costs for targeted prospects, mailers, and RSVP services were all purchased piecemeal. Handling RSVPs in-house bogged down my assistants, taking a lot of time and effort away from other tasks. Although attendance was good, the prospect-to-client conversion ratio was less than ideal given the substantial investment in time and money. Despite this setback, I remained resilient and streamlined the business, closely monitoring expenses. It took about a year to recover, but I’m glad I didn’t give up. By focusing on other activities with lower marketing costs, revenue and profit has increased.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
One lesson I had to learn is that there is no perfect balance between work and play. I often felt guilty for working too much and not spending enough time with my family, especially as kids grow up so fast. Conversely, when I was with family and friends, I felt guilty for not working on my business. Over time, I’ve learned to manage both better. Rather than seeking balance, I’ve learned to complement the two. When working, I give it my all; when spending time with loved ones, I am fully present. While this is still an occasional struggle, I have integrated the two aspects of my life. I can design my life the way I want and live on my terms, which is one of the perks of being a business owner (along with the stress that comes with it!). We all have the same amount of time, so it’s crucial to say no more often, be efficient, and thoughtfully plan your day, week, month, quarter, and year. Note that early in your business, there is a hustle required to reach your goals, but there is also a sense of relief when you achieve your milestones.
