Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jennifer Liceaga. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Jennifer , appreciate you joining us today. How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
I learned to do what I do by experimenting with different mediums and by watching a lot of tutorials online.
I think there’s no real way of speeding up the learning process when it comes to art. It is not something you can rush. You only get better with repetition, a wondering mind, and a true yearning to do better with each piece of art.
As a person with ADHD , I hyperfixate on different hobbies. For a while I was into sewing clothing for myself and others. I learned jewelry making, needle felting, photography, painting, drawing, crochet, sculpting. By acquiring these skills I am able to incorporate a lot of elements and layers into my work.
Some obstacles that have stood in the way for me? Time! Due to the time consuming nature of my craft, this is the only real obstacle. I have so many ideas I want to bring to life but only have a finite amount of time in a day.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name is Jennifer Liceaga and I am the artist behind The Coven Of Cuteness. I am a dollmaker / sculptor specializing in fantasy art with a spooky twist. Some of my subjects include fairies, skeletons, mermaids and other magical creatures.
Throughout the years I have experimented with other mediums but it was 5 or 6 years ago that I really decided to get serious about my career as a dollmaker.
I create art dolls ,wall sculptures and accessories based on my original characters and designs. My designs are fun, cute and spooky.
Some dolls I have made are pumpkin witches, ice cream demons, little carrots with arms and legs, skeleton fairies and a mage crow.
I like juxtaposition. Good and evil, life and death, cute and scary. So in my work I try to bring a balance of both.
Creating is my passion. I need it just as much as I need food and water. It brings me peace, It helps me heal and express myself.
Every creation comes from my heart and I spend many hours handcrafting all of the elements that help bring it all together. From sewing tiny dresses and shoes, to sculpting faces and crafting props for them.
I wish for my art to bring a smile to people’s face. To spark the magic inside them. To fill their homes with joy.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artists is being able to express ourselves. It is such a personal experience that we choose to share with the world. It can be scary at first but after a while…you can’t imagine your life without it.
I always say that if i were a millionaire, I would still be doing what I do. There’s no better feeling than being able to create something with your own hands. It’s an even better feeling to have people’s face light up when first seeing your work. I love it!
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
I started my social media accounts 5 years ago and it wasn’t until 3 years ago that I gained a significant amount of followers. Social media was so good to us artists back then. But it has since become increasingly hard to even get seen by our followers.
I would say, don’t stress about the amount of followers you have. Make content, stay consistent ,collaborate with other artists/brands and eventually your hard work will pay off.
Also ,do not commit to one single social media platform. Try them all!
