Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jennifer Hussein. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Jennifer thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. One of the toughest things about entrepreneurship is that there is almost always unexpected problems that come up – problems that you often can’t read about in advance, can’t prepare for, etc. Have you had such and experience and if so, can you tell us the story of one of those unexpected problems you’ve encountered?
I started my baking business a couple of months before the Covid pandemic happened. It’s not something you can see coming, factor into your expected business success, and I felt completely at a loss when we went into lockdown. Any large gathering, party, event, or even meet-up was canceled. We didn’t know how long this would go on for. We didn’t know if it would change. We didn’t know if the business would stay afloat. At that point, we didn’t know anything other than figuring out how to pivot to stay afloat. As a baker and a nurse at heart, I knew the importance of keeping everything clean. We pivoted to selling individually wrapped items and supplying local coffee shops that were offering curbside/contactless pick-up while keeping the dream of getting back to large cakes and event tables alive.

Jennifer, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Jennifer, owner of Bark Confections. Baking has been a passion of mine since I was a child. I always wanted to crack the eggs and knead the dough. As I got older my curiosity pushed me to become a self-taught baker. I tried my hand at baking breads, cookies, and even fondant cakes, but it wasn’t until recently that I truly let my passion envelop me. I’m a former nurse turned baker, and I love it!
Bark Confections is my passion project where I focus all my creativity on making custom cakes and desserts for all your most special occasions. I don’t want your cake or dessert spread to just look nice, I want it to taste great as well. I source the best local ingredients and love getting out-of-the-box requests for themes and flavors. A cake no longer has to be a plain white cake that’s vanilla or chocolate flavored. Bringing your ideas to life in flavor and detail is what ignites my passion for baking.

We’d love to hear about how you keep in touch with clients.
Since a lot of my clients reach out for small and large milestones, I use these dates to keep in touch. For instance, if they order a baby shower cake, I follow up to see when the baby was born, if they need a half year cake, 1st birthday cake, so on and so forth. Foster every opportunity to keep in touch.

Do you have multiple revenue streams – if so, can you talk to us about those streams and how your developed them?
While baking custom cakes and desserts is my main revenue stream, wholesale baking for coffee shops is my supplementary revenue stream that guarantees me a smaller but consistent revenue stream.
