Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jennifer Hossen . We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Jennifer , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Let’s kick things off with your mission – what is it and what’s the story behind why it’s your mission?
Kind was Created to be an ethical And accepting space For all people Within the skin & body care industry. To show people that beauty businesses can do good and help change communities, in positive ways. It was created to empower and inspire other women to be able to do the same. Kind was designed to help everyone feel good about their skin. Kind is made to love people We’re the renegades of the medspa industry.
Jennifer , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’ve been working in medical aesthetics for 17 years. Initially I wanted to be a make up artist and when I heard about cosmetic lasers, I was like “wow that’s what I want to do.” Some of the services that we offer our laser hair removal, different types of laser skin rejuvenation, Botox, chemical peels, relaxing spa treatments, and also a lot of wellness options. We help people feel good about themselves inside and out every day. Whether that be from dysphoria with hair, Scars, acne, aging, stress etc. There’s actually a lot of things that set me apart from others in the industry the first one is that I’m a woman medspa owner. Most of these spaces are owned by men or investment firms, owned by men, Yet Mostly frequented and staffed by women. Also I Wanted to make sure that I had a space where everyone felt welcome regardless of their income or abilities. I think healthy skin and wellness is for everyone. I have skin care products starting at two dollars, My office is handicap accessible for treatment, and I’m also located directly outside public transportation. We support local women product makers and artist in the space, we are period positive care space and Menstrual products are free for anyone in need any time and we donate those products to several local nonprofits on a regular basis. And we do a lot of mutual aid in the community and that’s why our slogan is “self care that cares for others” I believe that we all just need to care more about each other. I’m proud of all the great things I’ve been able to do it support Women and create a model ethical business space. I’m a single mom that started this alone during a global pandemic. What I want people to know about Kind Is that they can feel good about spending their time and money with us. They’re able to do something good for themselves but we constantly contribute and give back to our community. We Higher women and minorities and we pay well above livable wages even as a small business. Everyone is loved and welcome at Kind , whether or not you spend Five dollars or you spend $5000. I have a lot of experience I’ve worked with over 50 lasers in my career. That’s why they call me the Laser Beam queen. Right now we have over $1000 worth of toys & winter clothing were donating to the Mutual Aid Network of Ypsilanti. I hope by the end of this month I’ll be able to double that.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
I’m pretty involved in my community. I’m one of the Admins for the Washtenaw County Mutual Aid Group, an admin for my cities women’s discussion group, admin of my local by nothing group and a part of the Mutual Aid Network of Ypsilanti. I’m also a pretty outspoken advocate for Trans rights and equality. I’ve done a lot of volunteering for a long time and it’s really where my heart is at. You can’t ask for change if you’re not gonna be part of it. When people see the things that you’re doing the benefit the community it learns a lot of trust to your business because people trust in you.
Can you talk to us about how your funded your business?
Well this one’s pretty wild. I found a good deal a really good deal due to the pandemic and I decided I was going to take a risk. I had very little capital $7500 saved to be exact but I had lots of credit cards. So I put it all on my credit cards and I worked for jobs to make it happen. I worked doing things in the office that I just purchased of course, I was also working for a plastic surgeon, I was also bartending two nights a week and also doing catering work privately. It was really crazy, But I’m not afraid of Hardwork.
