We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Jennifer Hinostroza. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Jennifer below.
Jennifer, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear the backstory of how you established your own practice.
I made the decision to start my own business at the age of 38 after embarking on a transformative esthetics journey. In my younger years, my career had taken me through various fields, including customer service, Human Resources, and various supervisory roles. However, it was during the COVID quarantine days that I discovered a newfound passion for crafting handmade soaps, bath bombs, and body scrubs. This creative pursuit ignited a strong interest in esthetics within me.
Driven by this newfound passion, I took the bold step of enrolling in esthetician school full-time. This decision marked the beginning of an exciting chapter in my life. Following a brief stint working at a Med Spa in Newport Beach, I came to a pivotal realization—I couldn’t envision myself working for anyone else any longer.
With unwavering determination and a strong belief in my abilities, I took another bold leap and ventured into the world of entrepreneurship, establishing my own business. Undoubtedly, this journey has been filled with its fair share of challenges, and I continue to face them every day. Nevertheless, I can confidently say that it has been the most rewarding and fulfilling decision of my life.
Opening my esthetics spa came with significant challenges! Ensuring financial stability during the initial phases was tough, and I really had to be on top of my budgeting. The competitive nature of the esthetics industry requires innovative marketing approaches and a commitment to exceptional service to distinguish myself which is a constant work in progress. One of the hardest hurdles thus far has been maintaining a healthy work-life balance as I strived to set clear boundaries and manage my time efficiently between family and work life.
My advice for young professionals considering starting their own practice would be to invest in a solid education and try to gain field experience, conducting thorough market research, developing a comprehensive business plan, building a professional network, committing to continuous learning, prioritizing customer service and adaptability, and embracing challenges as opportunities for growth. Despite the inevitable challenges, the journey of entrepreneurship can be incredibly rewarding, offering invaluable experiences.
Above all practice patience and persistence! With determination and the right mindset, you can achieve your entrepreneurial dreams.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Within my esthetics practice, I often draw clients who are in search of solutions for sensitized skin, hyperpigmentation, and acne-related concerns. I’ve observed that many clients may not be well-informed about proper skincare routines. Conducting a thorough skin analysis allows me to identify potential issues like sun damage, acne, photo-aging, sensitivity, and other irregularities. By addressing these concerns proactively through tailored facials and personalized homecare regimens, we can prevent them from worsening. Ultimately, it’s a matter of educating clients about the right ingredients and their skin’s specific needs.
Among the skincare brands I’ve come to appreciate, Face Reality, IMAGE, GLYMED, REPÊCHAGE (a newer addition I’ve found effective for addressing hyperpigmentation), and SkinScript stand out as some of my favorites. While the quest for exceptional protocols continues, these brands currently occupy the top spots on my list. Additionally, I’ve found Dermalogica’s Precleanser and their back bar options for extractions are particularly beneficial.
Putting training and knowledge aside, what else do you think really matters in terms of succeeding in your field?
Succeeding in the field of a licensed esthetician involves a combination of factors beyond training and knowledge. Here are some key elements that I believe can greatly contribute to success:
– Passion and Dedication: A genuine passion for skincare and a strong commitment to continuous improvement are essential. Success often comes to those who truly love what they do and are dedicated to their craft.
– Client-Centric Approach: Building strong client relationships and providing exceptional customer service are crucial. Understanding and addressing clients’ needs and concerns can lead to repeat business and positive word-of-mouth referrals.
– Effective Communication: Clear communication with clients is vital for managing expectations and ensuring they understand the treatments and products recommended. Listening actively and explaining procedures in a simple, understandable way is key.
– Time Management: Efficiently managing your time is crucial, especially if you’re running your own practice. Balancing client appointments, administrative tasks, and personal life requires effective time management skills.
– Business Acumen: If you run your own practice, understanding business fundamentals such as budgeting, marketing, and financial management is essential for long-term success.
– And of course, adaptability! The skincare industry evolves rapidly with new products, technologies, and trends. Being adaptable and open to learning new techniques and staying updated with the latest advancements is important for staying competitive.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
Demonstrating empathy, actively listening to clients, practicing patience, being attentive to body language cues, and establishing clear expectations have all been instrumental in fostering strong client relationships. These relationships, built on trust and understanding, have not only been personally rewarding but have also resulted in numerous referrals. Trust is indeed a cornerstone of lasting connections in this profession.
