We recently connected with Jennifer Gonzalez -blitz and have shared our conversation below.

Alright, Jennifer thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Are you happier as a creative? Do you sometimes think about what it would be like to just have a regular job? Can you talk to us about how you think through these emotions?

I’m happiest when I’m creating art. I’m also on disability, so that provides something to help me get by on. Truthfully the idea that I would be more comfortable with a regular job hasn’t borne out for me because when I did work it was always a struggle to make ends meet and keep my mental health issues from affecting my employment. I think sooner or later they always sensed I wasn’t “normal”.

Jennifer , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?

I’ve always wanted to do art since I was a little kid. I feel like I don’t know how to do anything else. I mostly paint and draw “pop surrealism” . I was showing regularly at a gallery called Art on A in the 2010s but they’ve since closed. I’ve shown her and there since then. I guess I would like potential clients to know I also take commissions.

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?

I’ve managed to always draw, even when I was in a homeless shelter and my husband was in the hospital.

Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?

When I was younger there were other people saying that you had to stick with one thing, one medium so people would recognize you for that. But creativity is a lot more fluid than that. I’ve branched out to painting, comic art, music (from punk to experimental), and video art. It’s a lot more fulfilling.
