We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Jennifer Gilman. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Jennifer below.
Jennifer, appreciate you joining us today. Was there a defining moment in your professional career? A moment that changed the trajectory of your career?
I started my business as a Master Herbalist and was basically a clinical herbalist meeting with clients one to one. For years I would meet with them and talk not just about plant medicine but also nutrition, daily movement, drinking water and other lifestyle changes based on what they shared with me regarding their health concern.
I finally realized what I was doing was coaching…but I had no formal education in coaching. At that moment, I realized I was doing a disservice to my clients by not really knowing how to coach! Yikes! So…I went to school…and I then went to another school…and now I’m going to yet another school. I absolutely love coaching and realized how different every person is. It is like a puzzle for me to help each person reach their health goals. I currently have 6 years of formal education from accredited schools in holistic health and about to get my 7th year in functional medicine.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
As with many holistic health professionals, we have our own story. I was sick as a kid way too often. I would get every cold or flu going around. Finally in my mid-20’s I took charge of my own health and began learning, experimenting with my health. I learned about my immune system and gut health. I started using foods and herbs as medicine. I learned how important clean water was and how much to drink. I also learned about movement and what works best for my body. Later, I was diagnosed with Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis and believe that I had it for quite some time. Wish I would’ve known sooner but that was a learning experience. I’m now symptom free and take no medication! Huge win for me and I love helping others with auto-immune disease and hormone health issues.
Ten years ago, I started The Herbal Cabinet, my business that started out with plant medicine and led to holistic health coaching. I facilitate behavior changes towards my clients health goals, which leads to lasting changes for life. I take a “small steps” approach because this is what has proven to work! Small, consistent changes over time leads to lasting changes for life. I take a customized approach with each person because no one is the same. We are unique and should be treated as such.
I solve health problems around gut health, brain fog, fatigue, lack of sleep, stress, weight loss, blood sugar regulation, thyroid health, adrenal health, reproductive hormone health and it’s related issues, and nervous system regulation. The best way to check me out is to schedule a complimentary, 30-minute discovery call. We talk through your health concerns and you can see if I’m a good fit for you :)
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
A few years into my business I hit a wall! It was constructed from over working…stress! I didn’t think I would become that entrepreneur that burned out, but I was facing this. My symptoms from Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis flared up like crazy and I knew what I had to do. Take time and start a self-care routine. I began with a morning routine which took 5 months to finally implement on a consistent, every day basis. Now, I love it so much that I crave it :) I also implemented a good evening routine which helped me get a good night’s sleep each and every night. In the past few years, I implemented the healing practice of “pause”. This is where I take a few moments to myself in between appointments. My nervous system loves this :)
If I would have stopped as I faced the burnout, imagine how my life would be different. I would not have been so empowered with my own health, and I would not have helped as many people as I have :)
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
Growing up I was told that I had to work hard for the money that I earned. This was my story for many years which led to over working…and led to burnout. Once I finally realized that I was at the root cause of this…I was telling myself that I had to work hard for my money…I knew I needed some positive psychology to overcome this and it would take a consistent practice. Now, I know that there is so much abundance in this world and you don’t have to work so hard that your health is sacrificed. You can just work in an authentic and pure way, honoring those you work with and utilizing the skills you’ve learned. The abundance will come and there is plenty of it :)
