We were lucky to catch up with Jennifer Ghartey recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Jennifer, thanks for joining us today. Do you think folks should manage their own social media or hire a professional? What do you do?
I manage my own social media because I am not comfortable yet passing the control to someone else. I like to plan ahead and think about what I want to post. For me, it will take too much time to explain to someone what I would like to see posted on my social media.
Jennifer, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Jennifer Ghartey and I am a Wedding/Event Planner but I specialize in weddings. I got into the business after I planned my own wedding over 23 years ago and I enjoyed every moment of it. I did not get into the business right away, it took me years before I decided that it was what I wanted to do as a business career.
What sets me apart is my fun loving personality and genuine care for my couples. I love being a resource and guide to them so that they don’t get overwhelmed. I have great response time and follow up consistently.
I am most proud of my growth and ability to apply everything I learned from my last wedding, I’m always trying to get better with each and every wedding. I self evaluate myself after every event and figure out how I could get better each and every year. I also value my clients’ feedback.
Can you talk to us about how you funded your business?
I funded my business while I was still working full-time. I used my bonuses to open my business, build my website, take classes and buy supplies.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
When I started my business a few years ago, I did not have any clients at all for almost a year. I wondered if I made the right decision. I did my research, mentored and worked with another planning company and took classes. I didn’t understand why I wasn’t booking anyone, then things changed and I started booking clients.
During the beginning of Covid, I made a bold move and did a full rebranding with a new website, new name and new prices. It was the best decision I could have made for my business. I was afraid I wouldn’t get booked, but I have booked the best weddings and events since.
I am happy I did not allow fear to stop me from leveling up my business!
