We were lucky to catch up with Jennifer Fitch recently and have shared our conversation below.
Jennifer, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Can you open up about a risk you’ve taken – what it was like taking that risk, why you took the risk and how it turned out?
I am where I am today because I was willing to take a risk. I quit my teaching career to stay home with my sons . . .risk. Which led me to find a passion for health and fitness when I was trying to lose my baby weight after having three babies. I then became a certified group fitness instructor and began teaching group fitness classes to other moms with small children . . .risk. This is where I discovered macro tracking and began my personal journey of learning how to fuel my body with proper nutrition and saw my body change in ways I could never imagine. I was hooked. After years of thinking about it and being too scared to take action, I finally worked up the courage to become a certified nutrition coach and launch my own business . . .risk. I am now 5 months in since launching my business and I have never been happier. I did it all scared. I doubted myself countless times, but in the end I took the leap and I’m so very glad that I did.
Jennifer, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Hello! My name is Jen and I am a wife, mom to three boys and a certified nutrition coach. I help women learn how to fuel their bodies so they can feel strong and confident at any age without feeling restricted. I first got interested in learning about nutrition and later on specifically macro tracking when I was trying to lose the baby weight after having my three sons. After spending basically the entire decade of my thirties either pregnant or breastfeeding, I didn’t recognize myself in the mirror anymore and I didn’t know how to find my way back to a happy, confident place again. Learning how to properly fuel my body along with strength training helped me find myself again after becoming a mother.
I see so many women going through exactly what I went through after having their children and now that I’m in my forties, I also see them struggling with perimenopause the same way I did. I have such a passion and drive to help other women learn how to navigate these challenging phases of our lives without putting themselves on the back burner to the detriment of their own health and happiness. I create an individualized plan for each and every one of my clients to help them fuel their bodies properly and incorporate healthy habits back into their daily routines so that they can thrive at any stage of life. I also provide ongoing support and accountability for my clients to help ensure that when they leave me, they are equipped with the tools they need to continue to thrive on their own.
I think what most of my clients would say attracted them to me is that they can relate to me and my life. As a mom to three very active boys ranging in age from 7-14, my life is very busy. All three of them are very active in sports all year round. So my evenings and weekends are always on the go. I don’t have all the time in the world to workout and meal prep. I have to find ways to fit healthy habits into my life in spite of a lack of time. Women can relate to that. We are all so busy these days. I teach my clients that prioritizing our health while raising a family, while definitely challenging, can be done.
I think what also sets me apart from many other nutrition coaches is that my focus is on getting healthy and strong as opposed to just getting skinny. I do not promise quick and easy results. I promise education, habit building, sustainability, and balance. Perfection is not required in my program, but consistency is. When I accept a new client, I make sure they are aware that their health is always our first priority, not the number on the scale. I also teach my clients that we must love ourselves every step of the way and find ways to enjoy the journey. This is a lifestyle, not a 12 week challenge. We do not wait until we hit our goal weight to love ourselves and be happy. That starts now!
We also focus more on what our bodies do for us everyday and appreciating them for that as well as working hard to age independently as opposed to focusing solely on what our bodies look like. Aesthetic goals are great, but should not be the number one priority.
I am most proud of conquering my own fear and self doubt to start helping other women find peace, acceptance, strength, health and happiness.
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
So far, just 5 months in, the most effective strategy for growing my clientele has been to just honestly and openly share my life. My clients have told me that they chose to work with me because they can relate to me…my challenges, my struggles, my successes, and my failures. I find that the more I share of my life, the more clients reach out. Social media can be such a highlight reel that does nothing but make people feel bad about themselves. I try my best every day on my platform to share as much of my real life as possible, even when it’s not pretty. I want other women to see that I’m just like them and that if I can do it, they can too.
Putting training and knowledge aside, what else do you think really matters in terms of succeeding in your field?
Other than training/knowledge, I think the most helpful thing for succeeding in my field is compassion. I truly care about every one of my clients and I think they can sense that. I have compassion for their feelings and their struggles and I do my best to support them through it all. They are not just a number to me. They become my friends and their success is very important to me.
