Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jennifer Duncan. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Jennifer, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. What do you think matters most in terms of achieving success?
For many, the bottom line is $…and while that is a factor, to me success means a balance of personal and professional life. Working hard is something that you must do as a business owner. Your success in being your own boss is knowing how to run things from beginning to the end/sale. Having your life reflect success is making sure that your home/personal life doesn’t suffer at the hands of your work.
In the beginning, it will seem a bit unbalanced as you work out the kinks (in starting a business), but taking the time in streamlining your business functions will reward you once it’s done.
Lastly, knowing your weaknesses is actually a strength. You may find that you need to hire help to complete tasks that are essential to your business, but you have no time or desire to do.
Once that is all achieved, it can be really easy to enjoy the success!
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers?
I went to school initially for Architecture and Interior Design. I enjoyed Lighting Design as well. By the time I finished college, I was a Fine Arts Major with concentrations in: Architecture/Interior Design, Watercolor, Graphic Design, Photography and later got into coding.
I’ve worked in website development creating template designs for companies and also created a bank of stock images that I later sold.
When I first started, I was also working in social media – now I have a partner for that portion of my business and we work very well together, covering all aspects of marketing for our clients.
I also have a philosophy about marketing….while keeping your brand recognizable, you must also be ready for change in the style in which you promote yourself. At The Creative Chameleon, we say “To Evolve is to Succeed”

Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
My career in owning my business starts with my family dynamic. Family is typically the reasoning behind everything we do. I knew I wanted to be in a creative field, but I honestly thought I’d just work in a corporate setting for some large company.
In 6 months time, I had graduated college, got the career (I thought) I wanted, got engaged and married, bought a new car and a new house! Everything was falling into place and stayed there for a few years. We planned a family and very soon after, I was pregnant! It was all so perfect. After having our daughter Chloe, we quickly realized she was severely affected with Autism Spectrum Disorder. My career quickly came to a halt. Our girl needed me more than I needed to work and be away from her. My husband and I adjusted to a slightly different life and thank goodness it has worked for almost 20 years now! I work for myself so that I can care for our now adult daughter (whom we now have guardianship). My success has been being able to care for Chloe and making a name for myself (internationally) by providing a much needed service AND providing for my family.
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
I would say this is a combination of my website, social media (networking), online visibility (SEO) and I LOVE my clients because they are always referring me to new people. I’ve been able to have professional (and friendship) relationships that last decades because my clients are happy – That’s the goal – To provide a service that keeps people with you and refers you to others.
