We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jennifer Daly a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Jennifer, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to have you retell us the story behind how you came up with the idea for your business, I think our audience would really enjoy hearing the backstory.
Stand Up. Stand Out. Stand for Good. With those phrases in my mind and a dream in my heart, I decided to take a risk and start my boutique, Fierce Angels. After several years of women complimenting my wardrobe pieces at pageants, I began to think I may have an eye for unique and stand-out pieces. Beyond building a great wardrobe of glam pieces, I desired to create a brand that encouraged women to do good in their community. The name, Fierce Angels, came almost immediately. My vision was to not only create a glam closet for girls who like to stand out but also have models that embody the idea of standing up for good. Thus the name, Fierce Angels proved to be the perfect title for my boutique.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
As a three-time published author, global speaker, and goal coach, competing in pageants seemed to fit right in with how I live my life as a goal-getter. I love being able to pick myself up from mistakes and help teach and encourage other women who face battles in their own lives. Competing in pageants has allowed me to stretch myself, grow, and teach my daughters what it means to set goals, work hard, and give God the rest. During the day, my attention is focused on my full-time work as a Vice President of HR of a national digital marketing company. The ability to focus on helping people as an HR professional is one of the many reasons I pursued and graduated with an MBA. In the evenings and weekends, I am using my entrepreneurial skills and building my new business, Fierce Angels, and on calls with coaching clients.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
The launch of Fierce Angels has been in the works for two years. I never dreamed it would take me this long to get it up and running but I’ve learned along the way that great things are worth the wait! When I first wanted to launch it, Covid hit and I was laid off from my HR consulting job. I didn’t have the income to purchase the products but it did provide me with the time to plan. I would come to realize I needed a lot of time to plan! One of the foundational goals for my business is that I would not be in debt so having income in which I could use a portion to start my business, was key. Although it didn’t take me long to find another job, having that gap made me slow down the startup business and pause. Looking back, I am so thankful for that pause because Fierce Angels would not be where it is today if I had not had the opportunity to put more time into it.
Any advice for managing a team?
I’ve always told my daughters that being a leader means being someone worth following. Cultivating real relationships and genuinely wanting others to succeed, allows for high morale and a loyal team. Having the opportunity to be a leader in all areas of my life, makes me realize the importance I can make in the lives of others. When we enter a room, we can change the atmosphere just by our attitude. It is my goal in every situation for others to feel seen and heard. People are important, have a purpose, and are designed to do great things. I believe leadership is drawing that out for others to see.
